72 I6 200 engine. header, to cross over pipe at the end and two glass packs connected directly to the cross over, they end right behind the bench seat before the edge of the doors- 2 door. The exhaust has this drone that fills the car and makes it hard to think let alone listen to music. Its fine idling. But under power im sure its too loud to be legal possibly? My question is why is it so loud? it is because there is no length of pipe between the crossover and headers or between the cross over and glass packs or both? the headers come under the car about 6-10 inches past the firewall i think.
the sound is bouncing off the ground and back into the car, do you have side exit exhaust, or turn downs at the end.
No the header on a i6 goes into TWO pipes 3 cylinders to each. no turn out or downs, just the glass packs open ends. Ill have to put some more piping between the cross over and glass packs. will probably do turn outs before rear tire. Just though even if I did do that or over the axle exhaust it would still be too loud. Guess Ill try it and let yall know!
I'm running glasspack setup on my 2 door, 250 currently that ends middle ways like yours and it will drive you crazy. Do as others have said and finish running the pipe out the back or turn and run out the side. My other 250 has dual glasspacks out the side and I only hear it when I'm next to a car or getting on it.
Headers transmit more sound then a cast iron manifold and the glass packs just ending under the body will cause more reverberation. Making the cross over longer is NOT an answer. Run the exhaust out the back. Make sure the pipe is rubber mounted to the body. If it's solid mounted the entire car will vibrate. You may even try some header wrap as a sound insulator where the header/exhaust is close to the car body. I have a 12inch Glass Pack at the rear of my Mav and at the right RPM I will get noise in the car...as my son said to me, "If it's too loud, you're too Old"....
I think even with an over the axle pipe.....the exhaust will still have an annoying drone. When it comes to a 6-cyl.....they sound best with a real muffler...my opinion.
Here in Connecticut, by law, the exhaust has to exit beyond the rear most passenger. Otherwise, you will be getting exhaust fumes in your car.
What size pipe are you using? Smaller=louder Bigger=deeper I'm running dual 2" with a cherrybomb chambered muffler on the 200ci and it's not annoying at all and it sounds great at WOT. I'm with Craig on the real muffler part, I've ran a bullet type and a magnaflow and both were annoying and droned. Even the flowmaster I tried didn't drone like those two did. You can add another muffler and leave the glasspacks so they act like resonators.
