As some of you know I'm employed by Pypes Exhaust and part of my roll here is the product design manager. Since we are always looking for new products I would like to pose a question to the members.

If Pypes produced a Maverick/Comet specific duel exhaust system with a retail price of around $450 be something the market would support? In other words would you buy it in that price range?

Details of the system would be 409 stainless steel, mandrel bent, X-pipe, your choice of Pypes mufflers, tailpipes clamps and hangers.

We already make downpipes that I believe will work on manifolds cars but have never tested them on this application and all sorts of components to connect to headers.

If those mufflers are also stainless?.. that's a killer deal here guys. Suspend it right and stay off faster speedbumps.. and that setup will last a very long time.

Personally speaking.. if it's full stainless?.. I'd be in the market for one at that price point if I didn't do all my own stuff already. Unfortunately.. with the motor relocation I'm planning, mine will have to be a one-off custom setup anyways.

Couple more questions that will come up eventually anyways.. so I'll ask early on here.

    1. Are the mufflers and brackets also stainless too?
    2. Where will the tail pipes terminate?
    3. You're aware of the tight constraints on some of these cars after the axle? IIRC, the early ones are the worst with tighter gas tank clearancing.
    4. Shipping charge guesstimates from Summit or other authorized vendors on comparably sized/weighted systems? Maybe 40-60 bucks?

And one that I'd really like to know for myself. Do you guys have flow figures for various sized mufflers you make?

and also include what size pipe (s) youre offering

I could say I might buy something like that local and have them put it on depending on the total price but to buy something and have it shipped I wouldnt do it

my biggest dilemma is that I have no idea what any mufflers sound like other than the magnaflows I had installed on my comet. I took the magnaflows off the next day because I didnt like them. I have long tube glass packs on now and dont really like those all that much but way better tone than the magnaflows I had on

1 All the parts we produce are stainless steel so yes the muffler and hangers will be stainless. To keep cost in check and because most guys weld the systems the clamps are zinc.
2 The tails would exit below the valance.
3 We would take all that into consideration when we make the tailpipes.
4 shipping is a major concern but most of the major retailers have waived the shipping charges on Pypes products. Shipping cost us between 45-75 depending on where in the country it's going to.

Flow numbers where done years ago before my time and I do not have that data. I can tell you from a performance stand point out Street Pro out performs most changed mufflers, our Race Pro is equal to the Magnaflow XP series and the Violator is just a loud in your face straight through, no packing beast.

I'd be in for that, that's about half of what I payed for the exhaust on my green car. I'd like to see a X pipe.

    I'd be interested

is there a difference in the years with the floor pan/gas tank changes?

I'd be in forsure..too bad mine gets exhaust in a few weeks..ill have to wait till it gets a bit rusty before i buy though but for a cheap exhaust i know it'll cost me more than that & thats without mufflers and X pipe. good deal here for 450.

I would be in as well. Way cheaper than what I will have to pay for SS exhaust around here.

    The price is nice..

I understand feeling us out. I would be in for it.. But the problem I see is that most, if not all, will actually buy if it's available at the time we actually need it. Once I do my exhaust, I am not going to scrap it just to get new or stainless or other reasons.. All I'm saying is that the demand or need changes all the time.. Those of us saying yes now may not need or be willing later. Our forum does grow as time goes by so there are new people all the time. If the product is there when I need it I will always consider it from a member or place that tailors to us.

Correct. I would need mine by around memorial day or would need to go a different direction.

Another two obvious one's I missed.

    1. What's the time to production?

    2. What year vehicle/s are you using to prototype the kit?

    3. Which headers will you offer this system for? (Hooker 6901's, Thorley's?)

Not to make things any more difficult than they already are.. but I beleive you should also seriously consider doing a smaller 2.25" setup too.

Considering that not all of these cars have cams, higher compression, and shorter gears means they will be giving up slight amounts of low speed torque and response to gain higher peak flow in nonexistent rpm ranges their cams/induction will never run in anyways. I'm sure you understand the dynamics involved and with many stock/mildly modified 302's.. it's usually much better to size exhaust quite a bit too small than even slightly too big. Eespecially with the smoother better flowing mandrel bends.
