Got a question... Since I don't driver my maverick very much any more I've been thinking about installing a cheap electric fuel pump as a "Primer" pump just to fill fuel bowls. Has anyone done this? How would I want to install it? Before or after the mechanical pump? Parallel with "check valves"? I'm probably overthinking it but I would like some input.

i would just replace your mechanical with the electric and call it good... keep it simple.

I use a plastic squirt bottle with some avgas in it. Remove the top of the air cleaner give it a couple of shots ,replace the air cleaner and she fires right up. I use avgas so if I get some on my hands I don't smell like gasoline. Works for me.

My old pickup sits all winter. I maybe start it a couple times a winter, maybe every 2 months. It always starts fine after sitting. If it's sitting and loosing it's prime/evaporating the fuel, you may have other issues.

I did exactly this! I put the electric pump in the hose that comes from the sending unit and goes to the metal line up front. I didn't have to mount the pump to anything, the hose holds it quite securely. I didn't run any wires either! I grounded the black wire to the bracket that holds the marker light, and when i want to use the pump I just turn on the parking lights and slip the red lead into the marker light socket. It works great and prevents having to crank the engine a lot to prime the carb! The pump I bought is around $50, made by "Facet", and is sold at most auto parts stores. It also does not block the fuel flow to the mechanical pump when it is not running. Here's a pic:

Back when my car had a carburetor I was using one of those pumps (Mr gasket). I found that the was no reason for the mechanical pump, ditch the mechanical and just run the electric pump.

IIRC.. you were asking about this mod a while back. Can you clarify.. "I put the electric pump in the hose that comes from the sending unit and goes to the metal line up front" and be more specific?

Not sure about any raw fuel hose coming off any "sending unit". Does that mean that you .. ran the pump off of the regulator and tee'd or y'd into the main line ahead of the carb?

That's about the size of it.

Plus,.. you get to sit in the car and flip switches without ever popping the hood.

In 74 the fuel feed line comes out of the sending unit (lower left side of fuel tank) and has a 6" long hose connecting it to the metal fuel line going to the front of the car. I just removed a 3" section of the hose and installed the electric pump between the remaining sections of the hose. :)

Without a automatic cut off in case the vehicle is wrecked, upside down etc I don't want any part of a electric pump... That said there is no reason one of the late model EFI inertia switches can't be used...

As others already mentioned I just flip open the air cleaner and give it a little drink before I start cranking, lights right off...

X 3, I'm running the MrGasket 12S and it's quiet, reliable and plenty of volume to feed three carbs at WOT.

I replaced a blue Holley with the Mr Gasket 12s, best pump I ever ran. Much quieter, you don't get that whine like the Holley's do. Had mine set up on a toggle under the dash. Good theft protection, too, unless the thief knows about it, the car will run until it empties the carb bowl, then shut down.
