That's why they make overdrive transmissions.

That 3.89 is a great gear,& they last a long time if set up properly.Run the math on it & any gear that ends up w/ a # that goes to infinity(.9999999 or .66666) has the best gear pattern & they mesh better so they last longer.

noone asked what tire size you plan to run?
stock 8in axle? or replaced with 9 in?
if 8in and do decent amound of hiway with no 0/d 3.25 otherwise 3.55 as suggested
    9in i'd probably go with a 3.40 o/d or not

for traction unit look into the DPI Platnium track(8 or 9)

Just curious why you say that. What does the diameter of the ring gear (8" vs. 9") have to do with what ratio you would run?

    the 8in doesnt offer a 3.40 jumps from 3.25 to 3.55 to what a 3.80
9in you have more selection to have a possible happy medium
with no o/d a 3.40 with say a 255-60-15 or 275 a 3.40 will do pretty nice on the hiway while having a somewhat fun launch
3.25 will do well enough on launch or hiway weather its a 28in tire or a 25.7 17in low profile
but yeah, if you have an o/d its not really going to matter a whole lot, unless you're paranoid about rpm of your driveshaft

If it was me I would get a 9 inch out of a GMV with a 2.47 gears and install an old school performance wide ratio 4 speed with a deep 1st gear. 4th gear would act as an overdrive.

    UMM...........you're wrong here. The 8" that my 77 had when I bought it had 3.40's. It's now got a 9" with 3.50's.

You need to make some decisions before anyone can help you, otherwise it's just a crap shoot.

What is done to the engine?

Decide on what tires you want to run first.

Then decide if your daily driving will be mostly highway or city street.

Then decide on what percentage of time will be street time vs track time.

What RPM are you comfortable with on the highway?

Do you plan this gear in your current 8" or the future 9"?

Until you make some firm decisions, there is no way to really give an intelligent answer in my opinion.

dpi platinum track or Strange Engineering S-Trac if you plan to get a 9in built..
best multi pupose unit as it locks as good as a locker, but street friendly like a posi
