Since I put in a floor shifter I always wanted to do something with the steering column. Basically something to do away with the old column shifter mount and indicator to make a nice clean look. What have some of you done? Don't say use a hacksaw either .
I found a junk yard floor shift car and grabbed the column collars and replaced them on my original column.
I did the same thing as Rusty. You need to watch for different years columns if going from automatic to manual because the turn signal switch and ignition switch are made different.
I used parts from a 1989 F150 column to convert mine, it all bolted up like it belonged there. http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=69337
Thanks for the responses everyone. mav1970 - My ignition key is on the column. Good to know about the truck column Rick, thanks for the link too. I'm sure I'll have an easier time finding one of those!
The reason I asked is because mine is a 69.5 with the key under the dash and I went from an automatic to a top loader 4 speed so it was a little more challenging to find a column that fits, that has no shifter & has no ignition. One out of a 69 Mustang worked just fine for my application
The last picture is as far as I made it. Since then I have moved and spent the last year plus landscaping the yard and doing too many honey do's.
Still registered as a 1970 but the early release began in April 1969 similar to the early debut of the 1964 1/2 Mustang - by September, when the normal new car line came out, the Maverick had some re-designs such as ignition being in the column
I took apart my column and removed all of the shifter linkage and shift tube. Cut the manual shift lever nub flush with the collar and filled with All Metal body filler. Some Rustoleum satin black paint and no one knows it was ever a column shift.
I know the routine, when I moved it took me 2 years to get back on the mav project! Well now you have a good reason to finish it. So I can see it!!
Ah, good idea. I've never taken one apart. after you removed the tube and linkage that doesn't affect reassembly? Everything good and snug?
