Ok guys i have a question. Im putting an 8" out of a 76 granada in my 70 maverick and i wanna run a spool in it. Does anyone know what spine the axles are and what the factory gear ratio usually was. It was a 76 granada with a strait 6 and a c4

28 spline and most likely 2.79 gear ratio.

Unless it's a race car for track-use only, running a spool is foolish.

Are you EVER going to take this car to a drag strip?

Well it's dangerous. Not only are you compromising your own safety, but the safety of others on the road as well.

It irritates me how people will "cheap-out" and install a spool on a street car 'cuz they "can't afford" to do things the right way.

If you can't do something right, you shouldn't do it at all. And that applies to anything in life.

Well its not really a matter of cheaping out i but at least im not welding the gears. Im gonna upgrade the studs as well. And while on the street the tires are only 215s

I just recently had this debate w/ myself... to spool or not to spool. I was installing a new rear from a 75 mav, and it already had 3.00 gears and my crown vic discs installed...

I decided against it. It took me about a half hour to drop the rear out and pull the axles... I figure if I change my mind it wont take my much longer than an hour or two to install a spool.... and in the mean time; tires and my personal safety (as well as that of others on the road) are worth infiinitely more than what a spool will give me.

That being said though, I'm not gonna preach at ya. If you want it bad enough, do it, it's fast, cheap, and easy.

Why not just an open rear end with a higher gear? Not a race car, what am I missing?

Because i have a 97 mustang with a 3.8 that doesnt even make 170hp ad it blows 275s away with the open rear. The mavs got a mild 306 and its gonna see alot of track time. Just wanna be able to go for a cruise if im in the mood

As long as you don't break an axle on the street, you'll be okay.
I assume you won't be driving it in the rain (or at least very carefully around curves & corners).
