    Hey guys,

Just yesterday, I had trouble with the carb not opening and it wouldn't start. I proped it open and it started fine. Now it has to be proped to drive it. I want to rebuild/ replace the carb but I also want to put in a new engine. I want to keep working on it, but I don't know what kind of engine is compatible, it currently has an L6. I don't want to work to much on the engine and then have to change it likewise the carb. I want it to be high performance. Any help would be appreciated. Thanx

No, don't do that to a carb and try to drive the car. Your engine is an I6. Look at the throttle stop and find out why the idle is not up where it needs to be. The single barrel carb should have a throttle stop solinoid mounted on a bracket. Often these come loose or are misadjusted.
If you are thinking of a swap to another engine, what do you intend? The eaisest swap is the 302 v8. Anything larger is a bigger hassle.
I would get a little experience on the 6 before trying a swap.

i find mavericks dont have near enough space under the hood... even a 302 is crammed in there.. i wouldnt ever wanna put anything bigger in this car, would be a bitch to work on

    carb....

If I stick with the I6 and rebuild it, would it be better to rebuild the carb or get a bigger one? If I get a bigger or new one, is there a big difference between rebuilt or new (perfromance and price wise)? Thanx for all your help you guys are great!

i dont think rebuilding a carb will do much.. just get some carb cleaner and have the 4 screws adjusted for gas mixture, idle, etc..

depending on the year, for example 1973, the engine it came stock with wont have really much power. I have a 73 302 2v and i think i read the statistics on 73 302 engine and it came with a ity bity 141hp... so thats not really great at all... So the 6 cylinder cant be that great either.

I think throwing a 302 in would be better than working on any 6 cylinder.. hell maybe step it up and throw a 351 in it, i have been told its not much harder, and if your gonna switch the engine, might aswell take on the bigger job, worth it down the road probably

    just my 2 cents

Do you have any idea where I could find a cheap 351 or 302?

    for a no hassel swap i went with a 75' 250 L6.
put a 170 cid. head, bottom end cam, clifford single outlet header and flow master exhaust.(with 2.50 pipes) it sounds like a hot 302 and does impressive burnouts. because of the sound and performance most want to check under the hood to see "THAT 6CYL."

    351 engine...

I've been looking on-line and I seem to stumble upon windors and cleveland engines. I would like to know what these names mean and which ones would fit in my 70 mav. If I were to find one in a junkard, and assuming they'll let me take it, would it be worth it to buy it and rebuild it? Which engine from which car would be the best? All I've seen are mustangs with 351's. HELP!!

Tecno...are you up to the task of doing a conversion? Neither engine will be just a bolt in beyond the trans and motor mounts. These cars were not built to have these engines. There will be exhaust fit issues and many other issues to contend with. The cost starts to go beyond what you envision. Your statement about getting an engine from the junk yard is all telling. I'm just trying to tell it like it is. The are many on this board that have done the change and say it's no problem. For them yes, for you just know what you are getting into. I would enjoy the car a while and get some experience before jumping on this sort of thing. I would reccomend you read all the posts related to JC13 and see how it can go. You have a resposibility to your self to be informed about what you do and not depend on others any more than is needed.
