I am about to get my Maverick back and I am planning on moving the original 3 on the tree to the floor. I already have the kit, an Indy SSA 3spd floor shifter from Hurst, with the full instillation kit. I just have a few questions. 1) If anyone has done this, how hard is it to do. 2) How do I know exactly where to put the hole in the transmission hump . 3) Can I install the shifter without dropping the transmission. I can drop it if necessary but if it's possible to get it on without having to remove the transmission I would rather just leave it all bolted up. If any body has any info to help me out, or better yet can direct me to a website or book or something that has a step by step/diagrams for this swap it would be greatly appreciated.
I did this to '70 F250 and I just put the shifter where it felt best to me. then I took the rod from the kit and measured the distance from the shifter to the provided bracket that I had already bolted to the linkage. with this measurement I then cut the rod and laid the pieces side by side with the ends at the correct length and then welded 'em together. done. just keep in mind that the "universal" shifter is not going to fit exactly and you're gonna have to make it fit. it really wasn't that difficult and I was really pleased with the results when done. Leave the tranny bolted in, you should be able to work around it. Measure twice before you cut a hole in your floor, go slow & sure to get the best results.
Thanks for the help. Its good knowing I won't have to drop the transmission. I figured I was going to have to do some modification/fabrication, considering how many applications the shifter fits. Hopefully I will be as pleased with mine as you were with yours. thanks.
I did this convert many moons ago. It was'nt difficult. I used one of those Hurst universal kits on a 250ci. Just follow the directions. Yes, you can install the linkage without dropping the tranny. Deciding where to cut the hole for the shifter was the hang-up for me. The only thing you can do is once you have the linkage and brackets installed play around with a few options of where to cut. Take your time. It'll all come together. Figure on a 1/2 to a full days work. 77Mav302 lends good advise: Measure twice, cut once.
