Is it just me or are you treating me like I'm stupid? IF I am over complicating this, I am on a vacation and want this all ordered probably tonight so it can ship and I can get it in asap. Anyway, I am not putting a Mustang tank in. I looked at these some more and it may cost more than what I thought initially but to me it's the most effective. I do not have a fuel sender. I have nothing. One comes with the cells. I am between these 2 because Jegs does not list a sending unit type. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/jzp-204-016-01 $235.94 with brackets shipped but it looks to be backordered and it's only a 16 gallon. From my measurements it might be too small? or this http://www.ebay.com/itm/261212762322 +brackets...
i dont mean to come across calling you stupid. thats just a problem with communicating over the internet. i would not be comfortable with a plastic fuel cell hanging under my car. i could just imagine something puncturing it. i even dont like the idea of an aluminum cell under the car. its easy to puncture also. i think most fuel cells are designed to sit on a flat surface or have perimeter frame with support bars going across the bottom of the cell. the straps are to hold it down to the frame or floor. look at how the fuel safe cells are made. they take a plastic cell and build an aluminum box to protect it. if you have some fabrication skills you should be able to buy a plastic cell and build a frame to support it and then put metal shielding to protect it. also check out rock auto. they have mustang fuel tanks for $87-$110. and sending units from $37 to $42. i choose a 69 mustang with a 302 to get those prices. that tank will fit the maverick, line up with the filler neck and give you more room for dual exhaust. the only hassle is having to modify the mounting straps and the process is explained here http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=35490 that is the lowest cost and safest way i can figure out to put in a new gas tank in a maverick.
oh alright. thanks man. I may just find a way to box in the cell later on... the mustang tank is cheap and I would be interested in getting it to work, but I see I need to do all that cutting and this and that. Maybe if I didn't have a ton of other things I need to do to get this car back on the road, if it costs a little more and less aggravation with my other option. plus i like i can always drain a cell vs a tank. this guy boxed in his cell on his mustang: http://www.fast351.com/cartech/fuelcellbox/ will the plastic one be too small? I don't think I will be able to get it to mount to those braces underneath. I measured my available space: 26(back to front)x36 (side to side)
Seems like more work than it's worth, just buy a new 76 & up style tank, use your existing fuel sender, and goto the junk yard and find the other parts for the top of the tank, they are common Ford parts used in cars up till the 90's.
I don't have one and the nearest yard that i can inspect each one is over 35 miles away. that's the most expensive route too.
I would consider hanging a plastic or aluminum cell under the car to be dangerous without having it in a steel can - this is what we were required during my stock car racing years - I have a 16 gallon plastic Jaz cell in my 70 that hangs down through the floor like original but have it in a NASCAR style tube cradle and a 0.030 steel can I built - my original tank well was rotted out so I removed it - I still have to build a new trunk floor up to the cell and get it mounted solid - it does take the original filler neck too but modified - I have lost trunk space but it is what I wanted to do
$190.61 with shipping to start. summit has free ground shipping ok so I can build a cage or something around it later on no biggie. but what is going to attack it on the street? and once again can you tell me if a 16 gallon will fit underneath connecting the brackets on the braces? or will it be too short to work
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1970-Ford-M...ts=Model:Maverick&hash=item4ad5abb6f4&vxp=mtr Its obvious your going to do what you want. wheres the old one in the car? use that. thats what i did, works fine. My spare time is worth more than it would take to fab up something like a fuel cell where a result can be had for 250 bucks that's a direct bolt in. straps, tank, unit, all new, done. 2 hours work, max, worst case. Fuel cell is great if you are going to race or seriously modify the back end of the car. I love modifying stuff, believe me, but sometimes doing it for the sake of doing it doesn't make practical sense. However, if you just want the challenge, i get that. If its to save 150 bucks that i don't get. you'll have 500 bucks worth of your own time into it modifying to fit a fuel cell. Maybe oyu have more spare time than i do? if so, awesome.
Please read my posts. I stated a couple times I do not have the sending unit.I do not have a fuel tank. I do not have straps.
thats why i listed the link to the auction at the top of my post. here it is again. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1970-Ford-Maverick-fuel-gas-tank-sending-sender-unit-NEW-/321412380404?pt=Vintage_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&fits=Model%3AMaverick&hash=item4ad5abb6f4&vxp=mtr
i would bet you could post in the classifieds on this site for a sending unit and tank straps. also i found on autokrafters a sending unit for just under $100. i know its not cheap but just an option. just so i understand your current thought is to get one of the 2 cells you posted above and use fuel cell mounting straps to mount it to the bottom of the trunk. then what is the plan to hook up the filler neck? also these cells use an fittings. so you will need to buy some an fittings to hook it up. those are not cheap either.
