I ordered a Petronix kit and I'm installing a new wiring harness.
The Petronix kit says to leave the ballast resistor in if there is one there. Don't have one of those, however, the wiring diagram shows a resistance wire. What is it? And do I need a ballast resistor? And what coil should I run?

New harness...to what extent? All factory Mav harnesses have a resistance wire, look for the red wire with light green tracer that comes off the coil + terminal and runs to the distribution block under the brake booster. The other coil + wire (same color but non-resistor) goes to the starter solenoid and supplies 12v during crank. I thought all the Pertronix stuff was electronic and needed full 12v?

The actual resistance wire is pink, rubber coated and in the dash harness, at least on my Comet...

Complete replacement of all wiring, wiring harness. Everything else is pretty straight forward.

The Petronix is electronic. It didn't say I have to put a ballast resistor in, just if it's there, leave it.

    Thanks for the reply.

has to do with the coil rating. if you run a coil designed to be run with a resistor, and you dont run it, you will fry the ignition. since you have all new stuff (wiring) and getting full 12V to the coil, you are good to go.

external resistance coils are such a PIA.

Just went back and read the directions...
Next time I should read all of them.
    Just need the correct coil.
    Thanks again.
