anybody will tell me how to take the damn key/lock cylinder out of ignition switch? oh and i lost the keys by the way so any advise where to drill?
I think it would be easier to have a key made for the lock. It would be easier, and to get the lock cylinder out, you have to have the key. Let us know what happens. -Corbin
Removal of ignition switch Thank you! I don't have a Maverick, but a good friend from work (that you all I'm sure know) does. My car is a '72 Mustang Grande, and I'm in the process of adding a lot of what was options to my 'HULK' http://www.tomsveryown.com/1972 In adding a tilt wheel, I needed to know how to exchange the ignition switch and my pal sent me to this link showing me how to get it out and back in. Thanks so much for providing this as it came in handy! Have a great day! Tom
Above link won't work for me but I have in past drilled as close to center of switch as I could, using progressively bigger bits until tumblers fell out/drilled out. then just put in new switch.
while not the same car, my father just replaced this on my 86 mustang gt. the instructions were exactly the same. It went VERY easy with no hitches.
Ignitition key/lock cylinder I'm happy that the lock cylinder worked properly on my 74 Mav. Someone broke the driver's window and then punched out the ignition but couldn't get by the lock. He/she/it tried to bend it out of place but still couldn't get it dislocated. He/she/it also tried the same tactic on the glove box although it was not locked. Of course, you know who gets stuck with the repair deductible! But I was happy that the Mav didn't get taken.
Installation problem Hey there, I don't know if y'all will see a reply to an older thread like this but here goes: I found this thread and used the link to remove the ign. cylinder from my '72 Mav. In installing the new one, I ran into this problem: the locking pin did not reach all the way to the hole it is supposed to go into. I can see about half of the pin through the hole, but it doesn't engage when I try to turn the key to the off position. I called the parts place and am having another ordered just in case it is a defective part. Is there any sort of trick I'm not seeing or does this happen often?
I wondered...the receipt says the part is for a '72 comet with a 6 cyl. My Mav is a '72 with a 302. Its SO close, but just a smidgen off (enough to prevent the locking pin from engaging). Thanks for the info!
Well.....if you can get the cylinder most of the way "in"....then I think you have the correct part. Not sure why it is not going in all the way.
