Could someone tell me what the electrical device on the inner body panels is ? It is located about 3 inches below top hinge on pass side door on my 1972 maverick.

Hoping this is not some NSA tracking device lol looks like a temperature switch of sorts...

    Thanks

"Sounds like an ambient temp sensor." that was my thought when I seen it but this is a std. reg. maverick and I could'nt wrap my head around why that would be needed on any system on these cars.

No .... it is the Indexed Capacitor for the Ignition Amplification System, and that is the main reason why these cars pull wheelies whenever pulling away from dead stops ....

    :outtahere:

Seriously ... did the car come with A/C originally?

My 72 Sprint had that thing too, although it was never built for California. Going by that Electronic Spark Control diagram, it was the only component in the car from that system.

rthomass771 hit the nail right on the head THANKS my friend and everyone else.

    text from his link...
    Transmission Regulated Spark System
All 1972 Mavericks and Comets equipped with a 170 or 200 six-cylinder engine and manual transmission use a Transmission Regulated Spark Control System.

The Transmission Regulated Spark Control System (TRS) differs from the Dist-O-Vac and ESC systems in that the speed sensor and amplifier are replaced by a switch on the transmission. The switch is activated by a mechanical linkage which opens the switch when the transmission is shifted into High gear. The switch, when opened, triggers the opening of the vacuum lines to the distributor, thus providing vacuum advance. So, in short, the TRS system blocks vacuum advance to the distributor only when the outside temperature is above 65°F and the transmission is in First or Second gear.

that sticks out further than one on my car. I'm actually removing mine most likely when I do my v8 swap but thanks anyhow craig. I'm not even sure if I'm doing a small or big block yet. Been tossin around the idea of a gasser build while still in teardown mode on car. I want to do something different with this car, so many ways to go but I have to choose soon.

I had this on mine too and it's a CA car. You should also have the speed sensor on the speedo cable at the back of the cluster which is useful for adding cruise control on a stock trans/cluster arrangement.;)
