I have my motor back out of the car due to a cracked piston (clogged filter + boost while playing, oops) and while its out I would like to re cam it but I might also remove the paxton so I need some help deciding what to do. The motor is a roller block afr 185 heads with 72 cc chambers kb hypereutectic pistons eagle I beam rods eagle crank edelbrock air gap intake 600 cfm edelbock carb and I forget the cam specs but it had 480 lift on the intake and 500 on the exhaust. I know its not the best combo but it was a fun street motor. I ran a 13.03 on the motor with a c4 3.25 gears posi and street tires I found a good deal on a used paxton so I set up me edelbrock for blow through got it all together and pretty soon my posi was wore out. New best time was 12.21 with the same gears tires and no posi . I blew my C4 up so I bought a T56 magnum a nine inch with 3.73s and a locker and a set of 26x9.5 slicks and ran a 12.46 apparently on seven cylinders. I want my car to run in the mid 11s but I`m not sure what way I want to do it and I need some advice. I love the whine of the blower but if I can get the power I want with shaving the heads a bigger cam and carb I`m all for it. If I keep the blower what cam should I go with ? If I go na what cam and carb should I go with ? what would you do ? Thanks for any and all advice Elliot.
well a few things. the edelbrock carb is holding you back on power. i bet a switch to a holley double pumper will get you into the 12s on motor. if you stay with boost (i would) you need to put forged pistons in. a cam change will help. you need to figure out if your staying with boost or going all motor and get a cam designed for which way you want to go. you should be able to easily run 11s with the supercharger once you get it dialed in. to run 11s on the motor will be harder. its pretty simple, you will go faster with the supercharger than on motor when using the same heads.
I know the carb and cam were both holding it back big time in na form but do you think the carb is holding it back with the blower pushing through it ? I forgot to add in the first post I`m running 7lbs . If I go with forged pistons won`t I need to have the block honed out slightly larger since forged pistons expand more when the engine warms up ?
ive never done a blow though carb but looked into it heavily on turbo forums. their was a few people trying to get edelbrocks to work well but none that i saw that got it working correctly. just the fact that their is endless support for holleys on blow through carbs and parts will make the switch worth it. look into getting the forged pistons that will work with your current bore. your now spending money twice because of the first piston choice was wrong. so if you now choose the right parts you shouldnt have to do it all again.
I'd think it would be more similar to nitrous, (may not be?) having your rings filed to cushion the impact... nothing to do with the block..a stock block is always limited for what it can handle power/boost wise. i'd also recommend forged dished pistons.
... keeping the blower and I`m having a custom cam ground. I`m going to step up to forged pistons also
their are lots of off the shelf blower cams for your motor. i dont know what your paying for a custom grind but all the big cam company's have blower cam options. anderson ford has some blower cams that work really well.
I have a 3:49 with elderbrock rpm heads 10 1 compression c4 automatic with a 3000 TCI converter 389 gears 750 Quick Fuel double pumper carb 282 small base circle roller cam from comp cams I have run a best of 11. 94 115 mph in a quarter mile.still spinning off the line.
The 347 is more of a torque mtr say over a 331.Get the right cam & don`t gear the rear too low & keep the mtr under 6500 so it will live. With a tall tire it should not be as apt to spin off the line & will be just a tad sluggish on the start, however, once she spolls up that thing will take off like a rocket after about 60 ft & you will run em down at the other end.I have seen this over & over again with blower & turbo cars. Most of them don`t perform well on the start, but at the finish line it is a different story. My neighbor has a newer vette w/ a 600hp blower mtr in it,11 flat at a 135mph.If he could get off the line quickly this is a 9 sec car.
