If you're not going to put an overdrive tranny in it, go with 3.25 to 3.40 gears.

Keep the 3.80's and add an AOD. Better fuel mileage, (more $$ in your pocket) better acceleration and will keep the exhaust note at a bearable sound for that 36 hour drive. You can sell off the C4 and save the 2.79 money for the AOD. I know it wasn't one of the options listed as you want to keep the C4

I have 3.55's with my AOD, I've always thought they were kinda low.

I guess when it's all boiled down.. it really depends on how you like to do burnouts?

One wheel peel.. or two? Cheat with the brakes like the posers? Or just nail it from a standstill to show everyone you're wearing big boy pants?

The reality is that with a stock C4(stock convertor stall speed sucks!).. and mildly built small CID motor.. only one of the above rec'd gearsets will deliver adult attire. I'd rather run some taller "trip tires".. than move away from better gearing just for the sake of a rare or very occasional trip.

And not to burst bubbles here.. but scoop's engine is fairly well tuned after much time spent on timing and carb work to achieve what he does with it. Average tunes with typical manifold vacuum levels would probably be in the mid-teens with those gears. Any idea what your engine pulls for vacuum at idle with a mid-range cam like that?

Yeah, you must have very short tires to be turning that hard w/ those gears,go to a tall tire & you can get those r`s way down.
