71 Grabber..3 speed(column) 170 six..never driving that far for a maverick again. But extremely pleased with the car, really minimal rust! Already slapped a grabber hood on it and got it fired up. Gonna make it a driver and just enjoy an all weather mav for a while! 20150103_115749.jpg

Had to drive over to kenniwick, was the car somebody bought the hood off of. Picked up the rest for a good price, but dang what a drive getting 4 mpgs at some points lol. Got to meet up with Rick Miller for the first time as he offered to help load the car which was greatly appreciated. Also nice to put a face to a name!

I saw that on Craigslist. The guy had another one sitting there in the background too if I remember right. Looks like you got something to work with there.

Junrai was planning on buying a Grabber hood and rear spoiler from someone in Kennewick. I wonder if that's were the hood went?

Ah come on Matt that was not that far, I know I have made that trip at least three times and farther several other times, like Sacramento,Boise twice, Chico Cal.

I know the rest of the story for the car so I will be watching.

Nice score! Are you sure that is a 170? I thought I read the smallest engine allowed in the Grabber was the 200. Or was that just in 1970 models?

    What does the VIN show?

Hahah mike I really don't know how you do that! Then again..if another one came up a little further away, I'd probably say something like "I've done it before"

Should be fun eventually when it converts to shelbys...I'm gonna get some driving time outta this thing first though that's for sure lol!

So this brings up something I thought was weird, the vin declares the car a 71, and also contains the letter 'U' signifying a 170. BUT, according to the vin decoder, the letter U wasn't ever listed in a vin for 1971...
so my only conclusion..very early 71 grabber?

I know for '70 you had to upgrade to the 200 or 250 to get the Grabber package. Does your '71 have a 93 to indicate Grabber? (for newbies reading this, '70 did not yet use the 93 in the vin, that started with the '71's). If it is a 93 VIN Grabber and it has a U code 170, that would be most interesting indeed.

Got a pic of the data plate?

Yup its a 93. I thought it was weird when I saw someone else post the vin for the car (actually thought they messed up) then when I got the car myself, I couldn't believe it was in fact a U. I will get a data plate photo tomorrow when I'm back at the shop..

I went and checked Craig's Grabber information page. The original version of the Grabber, did indeed require the engine be at least a 200. In the second version of the Grabber package offered in April 1970, you could get the 170 too. Ford must have continued the base engine in the '71 Grabber as well, which is what you have.

I think the 170 would be a pretty low production in the 93 VIN cars. If you order up a Marti report, it will be interesting to see.................. :bouncy:
