Hi guys. I am doing the drum to disc swap and I am having some trouble removing the spindle.

What's the best way to do this? I've got all the cotter pins and nuts out...but it's not budging.

I've been pounding the side of the spindle where the lower ball joint bolt goes through with a 2 lb dead blow hammer and a ball ping... no luck.

    Any advice is appreciated.

    Thanks

Have you tried to use an actual ball joint removal tool and a pickle fork?
Or just get real angry at it and give it a real swing,
but the former is much wiser and cost-effective. All you need to do is run by your local O'Reilly Auto Parts and rent them, it's virtually free

A ball-joint separator or a pickle fork (or an air-chisel with a fork attachment).
The latter two will destroy the dust boot, so unless you're replacing the ball joints (which some with new dust boots), I suggest the ball joint separator.

You are not hitting it hard enough. I use a sledge hammer.

I moved this to a thread of your own................... :watching:

BFH and a pickle fork. You can use a little heat to thermally break the bond between the 2 metals. BUT DO NOT overheat it (glowing red) or you can change the temper of the forging. Also, do not quench with water, let it cool slowly in the air.

Thanks. The dust boot was cracked so I used a pickle fork. That did the trick, pretty easily.

    Thanks for the help guys.

Did it take a sledge hammer?

Didn't get to the sledge hammer.... inspecting the boots, it realized I was going to need to replace them. So, my apprehension of the pickle fork destroying the boots was gone.

Going to replace the lower control arm, stabilizer bushing.... need to figure out how to do the upper ball joint if I can't find a dust boot for it.

A dumb question... how do you remove the grease seal, inner bearing cone/roller and inner/outer cups?

Outer cone came off without a hitch...but for the life of me, can't figure out how to remove the rest.

Thanks for all of help on the forum.

Put the nut back on the spindle a turn or two, hook the inner bearing over the nut and snatch the hub back off. When the grease seal hits the spindle's nut the seal will come off the hub.
