Don't know if you have a 6 or an 8 engine. Remove the #1 spark plug. First one on a 6 or first on on left side facing engine if V8. Remove coil wire from cap. Using finger, safely feel air press. blowing out when (ticking ) engine over with starter. Stop and line up the pointer on front of engine to the timing mark of zero. Set dist in so the rotor lines up with the plug post for #1 clyldr. AT THE SAME TIME the multi pointed wheel on dist shaft must point to and lineup to the center of the pickup.
Replace all parts, then remove the vacuum line from the dist. and plug it's end. Using a timing lite, start engine and rotate dist. to line up a 6 BTC on the timing marks at front pulley. Tighten dist., replace vac. line. The timing marks on the 6 is laided out opesite that of an 8 with the notch in the pulley as the pointer. You are done!

Rick, in my opinion you might want to get a friend who knows his (or her) way around a car, and have them help you. It may be very difficult to read how something is supposed to be done , especially if you have no experience with cars. Don't get me wrong....this is a great place to get help, especially from these guys, who know their sh_t. Visuals and hands on is so much better. Try to buy a copy of a Chiltons repair manual for 70-77 mav/comet...can usually get one on ebay. They are very helpful. Good luck, and keep pluggin away.

    ( here's two ...cheap)

    chris,
i see you have a '73 302. i also have one. if it will crank and run you are not far off. mine is cammed up a little so my timming is a little diff. than stock.
you could move the dist. just (a little) and see what that does. if it sounds worse go the other way.(a little) . as was suggested a book will be a big help now and down the road. let us know if this helps if not we always have a... "plan B"...frank...
