When I got my Maverick the gaskets and weatherstripping were, of course, dry rotted and cracking so it did leak a bit from several areas. I had the windsield and gasket replaced. I took it to a company (obviously I picked the wrong one) and they did a botched job - found 2 inches of water on my floor pans the next time it rained. It was leaking in between the gasket and the body. Long story short - they were unable/unwilling to fix it. I ended up having to take it to a more reputable window replacement company who was more equipped to deal with an older car. They reinstalled everything and used a bit of heavy duty sealant and said it appeared to be fine. They said it wasn't cleaned and prepped properly around the window frame. It rained heavy today and I came home and found that a tiny bit of moisture was still finding its way between the gasket and windshield this time on the bottom. Looks like it was seeping through. I am going to call the company tomorrow to have them look at it again, I guess, but I am getting so frustrated. I didn't think it would be so difficult for a professional to do it. Has anyone else had issues sealing up their car, or is this a more unique issue for that I am having?
Have u done the water test on the cowl? It may not have all been coming thru the windshield. In the case of the first shop, it sounds like they - didn't know what they were doing. I had a windshield replaced early this year and no problem w/ leaks. The shop that did my car does lots of old car glass and vinyl roof. My car is in the garage but has been in rain a few times and no problem.
I did not test anything on the cowl. Unfortunately I can physically see where the water is getting through. There is a "bead" of water running along the bottom between the gasket and the windshield on the inside. It is not dripping or anything, though, just a small seep. I guess it appears to be getting under the gasket on the outside ledge and going under the glass and back up the gasket on the inside. I was told by the second shop that if a windshield is installed properly they usually dont have to use too much sealant. Perhaps this is one of the situations why they say "usually."
Ok! I see what the problem is. Since u can visually detect the problem the last shop shud be able to resolve the issue. Hopefully, they won't give a problem.
see if it is where one of the moulding clips is at. were the clips installed before the glass? we just dealt with a leak Collin had on his car. it turned out there was no sealant behind the clips (that were installed before the glass). we removed each one and put a bead of sealer behind each one...no more leak... in the beginning to check it we pulled one of the clips, sprayed water on the seal at the bottom of the windshield. then took an air nozzle and blew compressed air where we removed the clip. air and water blew out from where every clip was on the bottom of the windshield...
Just run a small bead of Butyl sealer across the bottom between the gasket and windshield, problem solved.
Ok so thank you for help first of all. I have an update about this. I just got it back from the second shop for the second time. I chose one who do have a decent reputation who deal with classic cars and it rained overnight and is still leaking. They used butyl with a new gasket. It looks like they used a ton of it which didn't bother me as long as it worked, but perhaps there is too much.. They also replaced the molding clips. They still didn't say there is anything wrong with the car to cause this. I am at my wits end. Its been 5 months and this still goes on. I am about to just tackle it myself with my dad. I'm weary of trying a different shop or taking it back again, but does anyone know of any classic car windshield shops in Maryland that they have dealt with? I just don't even know what to do with this anymore.
Lol, I was asking Dollface to see if I could point them in the right direction. I just moved to FL after living in Crownsville for 32 years.
I moved from Baltimore to Ransom wv in 1985 . Now live in the mountains and will never go back to live. Just visit the family. I will try looking it up today. Thanks
I'm in Live Oak Earl. About 45 miles south of Valdosta, GA and half way between Jacksonville and Tallahassee.
