My son bought a 1970 Ford Maverick as his first car and it needs some serious TLC. All I can say about it is that at least it "runs". He is very eager to get the car out on the road, but there are a number of things that need fixing before I am comfortable with him driving this car anything more than a test drive. Just looking at the car in my driveway I have identified a number of problems. Fuel tank leaks due to pinholes. This needs to be fixed first. Potential brake fluid leak. At least one of the leak spots on the driveway appeared to be brake fluid. I'll have do more detailed inspection of the brakes. Fuse block needs to be fixed up/inspected. It has wires hanging off the front and the instrument cluster lighting does not appear to be working. I want to get the cluster lighting working and make sure there are not fire hazards with the wiring modifications. Choke needs to be fixed. Choke always open with air cleaner installed due to screw that is too long. Heat riser tube missing so the choke will remain closed after fixing the too long screw problem. Valve cover leaking oil. Possible leaking head gasket. Possible leaking rear main seal. Could be oil coming down from the valve cover. Front parking brake cable seized. Small exhaust manifold leak. Missing oil dipstick. Gotta be able to check the oil level! Carburetor adjustments need to be checked. It looks relatively new, but I worry that it was not adjusted after install. Ignition system needs to be checked. That's the mechanical problems. The body is pretty rough on the underside as well. I will have lots of questions as I help my son fix these problems to get this car road worthy. I'll post those over on the technical section.
Keep in mind that the 1970 drop in gas tank is not reproduced so you either need to get it reconditioned or find a good used one - one other option is to use an early Mustang drop in tank but fabrication work is needed to your trunk floor to get it to work - good luck with your build
I updated my location on the profile. I may take some pics over the weekend so I can get some pics while the sun is shining.
