you'd hear the power steering pump whine... could be the power steering ram/slave/whatever, but it didn't make that big of a difference on mine, as long as the lines weren't plugged. another thing, mine is difficult to turn, but after a while, you get used to it. It is not like driving a Ranger with manual or a Nissan Sentra with manual, its old school. On a Nissan, you can let the steering wheel center on its own, on my Comet, you need to control it a bit or it WILL jerk back to center faster than you want it to. Caster has an effect on how strong it pulls back to center as well as how difficult it is to turn.
No it seems to me that it was a power steering vehicle that had the pump and resevoir and other things taken out of it.. much like MaverickGrabber said earlier in the post, so I'll check that next time I see the car. I think by my experience of driving the car, that that is the answer, I just wasn't sure how to check.. But hey thank you all for your input and suggestions you have been a big help. Jason
Jason in answer to your question of worth....I would say got a great deal...the thing is...if you feel like you got a good deal...then you did. We Want Pics...We Want Pics....
"Hard to steer" is a relative term. Since I grew up on manual 50's, worm and sector gear, steering boxes, all these reciprocating ball boxes seem easy to me. To determine if you got a good deal, you have to figure out if you could build the same car with the same amount of money with your current skill levels, factering in the amount of time and frustration you will incur. Or, just say "yea, buddy" if your happy with the deal.
My comet steers easy...even my petite wife can turn the wheel at a stop. Hey man, you can't get much for 3 grand nowadays...be glad you picked up a Mav Grabber while you still can. I wish I could find one with a decent body. You'll solve the steering problem. Good luck and post some pics when ya get'em.
the slave cylinder/power ram can just be removed. The steering control valve is what needs to be removed/replaced by either a manual ball joint (basically a control valve that has been modified) or a manual center link.
Thanks everyone for the input, you've really helped, when I get back down To NC to do more work on the car i'll get pics.. Jason
