I have a 76 mav. and have had it for 5 or 6 years, I bought it with the impression it was a Stallion package, as it has the paint job, fender badges, 302, bucket seats, and so on. Further research has shown that there are less than 250 of these cars known to exist, how can I be sure mine is an original, and not a clone? is there some way of running the vin to get this info. I am considering selling this car and I would like to be sure before running any ads. please help, thanks...
Pretty sure you can't be 100% positive without the original invoice ... If it appears to be the original paint job there are people on there that can tell you the factory painting techniques to prove it was painted at the factory. Good Luck ..... P.S. What is the color scheme?
The VIN number won't specify if it's a Stallion or not. The Stallion package was just a two-toned paint job and blacked out chrome with the Stallion badges on the fenders. In some states like Ohio, the Stallion is actually titled as a Stallion. I don't know if other states do that or not. I believe they all came with a black interior. On the original Stallions, the stripe seperating the colors was a tape decal. If your car has been repainted, the stripe may be painted on. Another thing you could do is to look up under the front seat for a folded up peice of paper tucked up in the seat springs. If it's still there, that would be the factory print out sheet. That will tell you everything the car came with from the assembly line including the paint colors and if it was a two-tone paint scheme or not. Just be carefull pulling the paper out. They get very brittle with age and could crumble into peices. Do you have any pictures of the car you could post for us to see?
How is it possible to have a horse package on a car named after a cow? I would think they'd have a calf package or perhaps a bull package. I think the bull package is what I have on mine.......it has both horns and BALLS!!!
the build sheet may also be under the carpet, under the front seat, that's where mine was, actually, it was under the sound matting
The other two Stallion editions for 1976 were the Mustang and the Pinto; both named after horses. When Ford decided to include the Maverick in the Stallion lineup, it was probably more cost efficient to not make a seperate fender badge for the Maverick model. If you do a search through the archives you should be able to find a similar dissusion we all had on this very topic.
I will be in the KC area in March. Would be glad to stop by and give you my honest opinion if I think it is an actual Stallion. Other than the good advice already given, there is no real way to say. Of course a person could color sand down to original paint ( if not stripped prior) and find original details that way. Dan
Thanks for all the response and............. the car's floor pans in front were rusted through on both sides, I had to gut the inside of the car, to cut out all that was rusted, and weld in new metal. I found no papers, the paint on it is blk w/ grey stripe, but the paint is pretty faded, you can see underneath that layer where a few chips are there is a metallic looking powder blueish color. The car is an unfinished project that I haven't had time to work on in a while, needs body and paint, and some finishing work. Car has bucketts, blk int, rallys, 3 speed manual trans, mildly built 302 with holly 600 double pumper, and flowmasters, sounds and runs strong, but I've put some long hours in it if anyone knows anyone who is intrested.
Try calling the Ford Customer Assistance Line at 1(800) 392-3673 and ask for a history 999 report (have your VIN number ready). IT'S A FREE REPORT with all kinds of build information on YOUR car. It might help you identify if your car is a stallion.
Good idea ... Forgot about that ... but it may not indicate a Stallion since they merely go off the VIN ... We know the 93 in a VIN indicates a Grabber. On my 999 report it breaks down the VIN and says: 93 2 Door Ford Maverick Sport Sedan Standard. Since the Stallion will have a standard 2-door VIN it may not help. Maybe some of the Stallion owners on board have a 999 report and they can let us know ...
