My 71 Grabber is driving me crazy. It continues to crank after the key is off. It will fire and start only
if I hot wire it. I have replaced the ignition switch, the solenoid, the coil everything you can think of.
It also seems like something is shorting out after it spins using the key to start it. The only thing that
I can think of that I haven't replaced is the lock cylinder. Does anyone agree?

maybe the linkage from the ignition switch to the key tumbler is gummed up. you may want to pull the steering wheel so you can pull the key cylineder then try cleaning out the mechanism, put fresh grease on it and reassemble.

I'm thinking it's the starter solenoid.

    Nope it's only the lock...

Assuming it doesn't require a bunch of jiggle and shake to operate, you have other issues...

    Agreed...

Disconnect both of the small leads on solenoid, if engine continues to crank the solenoid is defective...

Or if the two small wires on the solenoid are reversed.

What will the reverse solenoid wire do if your trying to crank it?
