Hello, I have a '71 Mav with a 200 engine, no AC. For as long as I've had it--some 18 years, it's had a five blade radiator fan, which has less than an inch clearance from the top hose. Could this fan blade be the wrong one? There's no room to move the radiator down. Thanks for your help!
If it had A/C or HD cooling it's probably correct... My '71 Comet GT parts car had a four and had approx same amount of clearance... V8 versions have the upper hose farther to outside and blade is approx even with seam on upper tank... Without a shroud extremely dangerous...
Hi, thank you for your response! I just measured it, it's 17-inches across, and five blade. In the Maverick repair manual, it shows a four-blade, but I've not been able to find the diameter. I'm thinking the previous owner put in this slightly larger fan, thinking that less than an inch clearance from the hose was fine.
I just checked the Master Parts catalog, for 1971 200 used Std cooling, 17 1/8" - four blade(also 250) with A/C, 15 1/16" - six blade 250 with A/C, 17" - five blade
Wow! Thank you! I certainly can't raise the radiator, nor can I lower the hose, and since the clearance doesn't seem adequate--to just me, maybe--I think I'll look for a blade that's just a bit shorter. It'll also give a little more clearance to one of the transmission lines which seems dangerously close to the blade as well.
Here are some charts with all Mavericks radiators and related parts that have something to do with the cooling system http://www.dixiemaverick.com/tech/DMradiator.html
Thank you Krazy Comet and rthomas771! No, the car never had AC. I'll look into getting an American made fan that will fit it, likely not OE, but I'll have peace of mind!
