So a few of the mucle cars I autocross with decided to go to the Race Legal drags at Qualcom Stadium last night. So i decided to go. Ive drag raced their a few times in the past and never like the lousy traction of drag racing on an asphault parking lot. so i didnt change anything on the car. i left it in full auto cross trim. on my first run i ran a 8.4 at 89 mph with a 2.5 60ft. then right after i ran one of the other autocross guys crashed! it was a cool 66 mustang convertible. the clip that holds the master cylinder push rod on the brake pedal had fallen out and he had no brakes at the end of the run. his autocross skills kicked in and he was able to swerve around the concret barriers at the end of the tack then he tried to spin the car out to slow it down but the car suck and he hopped a curve and went head on into a concrete sign poll! He walked away sore, but the whole front end of the car is wasted. so that really put a downer on things. i made one more run which was a 8.7 at 88mph with a 2.4 60ft. i had to wait in the staging a long time with the motor running building heat for this run. i think that was why it slowed down. here is video of that run. you can see the rear kick out on the second gear shift.
Fun times! Not bad at all when you consider you're rear gear forces you to use only 3 forward gears of the trans. 4.56's or slightly better and you're in a whole other world at the end of that run. Well, at the bginning too. Course, good luck hooking that kind of ratio up to be able to get there. lol
to go to drag race trim i would need to put long studs in the rear for the drag light wheels my drag radials are on, put the traction bar links back in, disconnect the front sway bar and back off the extension setting on the front shocks. ill probably do that this fall to go to fontana which is the closest 1/4 mile track this fall. over all im having more fun autocrossing than drag racing. it is nice to have the option.
I enjoyed the video - are you running something with straight cut gears like a gear drive? At the end it sounded like an M-22 Muncie downshifting
I think he's still running the G-force T-5 that was in it when Mo had it. The gears are cut on a low-helix angle just like the M-22...
Sounds great!! Just like the 55 Chevy in Two Lane Blacktop - one of the few movies where they got it "right"
