Okay so I mean it pretty basic as what the title explains, so I was taking off all the trim and notice the passenger drip rail wouldn't budge so I looked beneath and noticed rust holes so when I took it off there was huge pieces broken off and chewed threw, I noticed there were bubbles in the paint around the roof so I got a flat head and hammered it and went through with no problem so I sanded it and the idiots but a s*** ton of body filler for holes and to cover rust so my problem now lol (as showed in pics) but I cleaned the inside and open the hole as far as I can so I can add the magnet attachment to my screwdriver and pull as much of the rust out, I got the smal pieces out so I just pushed the rest as best as I can through the hole that goes to the interior (in pics again), so then I checked the driver and noticed it was too loose so I took it off and had minimal rust, so my question is what type of gauge she metal is the roof and drip rails? And has anyone worked on this or removed but I'm still deciding between keeping or removing same for the floor
Yup and you will need to get every bit of that rust out of there - I believe the drip rail is also built in more than one layer so part of it is the roof and part of it is the door frame
I'd shave the drip rails and leave them off then shave the door handles fill in the rear panel for the tail lights and put in 36 Pontiac led flush mount lights put in a hidden antennae on the rear quarter panel that raises when the radio is turned on put in a side fill flip up gas cap like a road race car a grabber spoiler and mirrors and a ''shaker hood'' off a cobra jet and a front spoiler but that's just me, seriously the rail is shot you will have to remove it and all the associated rust Rust sucks and you have a lot of work ahead of you strip it to bare metal to see what you have to work with
Pull the head liner...See what you have inside for damage (Going to be alot) It will be easier to actually replace the roof than to repair what you have. Thats if you have good fab skills and the tools. To replace the roof...Long tape measure, good sawzall or hand held band saw.Good welder and solid weekend and bobs your uncle... Oh, almost forgot...A good roof with A/C pillars in place to put on.
if I had it to do over again I would have bought a running driving Maverick instead of another project at my age I"d rather drive them than work on them but I AM CHEAP
The car has the headliner pulled already from a week ago and has no rust under the roof, I know how to do metal work, I may push the drip rail closer the the body, I may sometime in the future do a side gas cap except a gas door like modern cars but still designing, making a rendering of how it's gonna come out
if you know how you should know what gauge it is... the rust you don't see underneath is the problem...
i used a 65 mustang tank centered it and made a pipe to it and used a flip up cap for street rods it looks really good i even used the stock Maverick rubber boot for the trunk floor it looks like a factory set up
I believe I've seen yours before, I came across a thread that someone did that and came out perfect I'm in engineering, we've been spending a semester on metal, and 3d printing, and etc. they didn't tell us about the different types of metal, they just said use these dimensions and come up with this part
I use backyard engineering I measure it with a tape measure, I mark it with chalk I cut it with a cut off wheel or a torch I use a gauge of metal I can bend by hand or with two 2 by 4's and c clamps
