I know how to wire a house but automotive wiring is a whole different ballgame. I'm installing a JEGS fuel pump relay in my 73 Maverick. I have a 10 gauge wire for battery power and a 18 gauge that needs to run to the ignition pulled to the front of the car. Can anyone make it easy by telling me the best locations to connect these wires?
Starter solenoid is probably going to be the easiest. 10 gauge to the large lug that connects to battery, obviously fuse it. The 18 to the small terminal marked "I " (ignition) it's not a full 12v when key is on but should be enough to trip a relay.
The "I" terminal is also on the solinoid...The two small lugs on it...One is marked "S" the other is "I"...
Assuming you're still running points I wouldn't recommend using the I terminal on solenoid to trigger the relay... While it does have 12v when cranking, the voltage falls to around 8v with engine running(yes generally that will keep the relay energized)... May work OK for you but if there are mysterious losses of power to pump that's likely the reason... All this said I use the I terminal to power a relay for aux supplies, but the original ign is no longer in use...
this is what i ran recently and they work awesome. each relay is $25 and $5 for the connector and pins. they work under 8 vdc, supports 70amps. no fooling around, they work. good way to get your relay and fuses together. relay: 37702-1AN0022 cooper busseman. m8 and m6 studs. fuses: 0495040 40 amp cartridge Style Fuse Green JCase FMX 32V pins: 282403-1 CONN MINI MIC SOCKET 22-20AWG connector: 282080-1 CONN PLUG 2POS 1.5 SERIES BLACK
