I am looking in relocating the gas tank filler neck, I'm in the process of metal work on my car, rust etc but also body mods, I already installed my 69 mustang valance and have it all screwed up to the car, need to modify the ends and cover the reverse light holes but I have found a gas door, the plastic covering surround for the filler, etc. everything for a modern gas tank, and you guys may not like my idea but it's what I'm going for, i like the trunk capacity, looks bigger then modern cars but only cause we don't have all the electronics taking up the space, I was thinking of making a plastic panel for the inside to cover that like compartment between the quarter and the turn floor so the filler neck won't even be noticeable, plus it will look modern, also here's another catch, I found a pair of 1968 coronet (dodge I know) quarter skins and I like the style of them especially since it was $140 for the pair, the bottoms are rusted but I just want the body lines and inspiration, so I'm gonna try to invert the body lines into the styling but make it flow, not just put it there, so I have tons of work ahead of me, but I already drew a sketch and I'm happy with it, I know you guys are gonna think I'm crazy but I have heard of people restoring and customizing but not hanging the actual appearance besides the bumper or hood or spoilers, mirrors etc. so wish me luck, I think it's gonna look stunning at the final result, I will start this project approximately on the 10th of October, and I plan on finishing it by February of next year due to other areas of body work, I'm also shaving my drip rails little by little as it does hold the roof together

Yes the files are not mine, these are pics I have found on the inter to give you an idea of my route in how if you can see from a creative perspective how the lines on top of the door (below window) curve down like the maverick 4 door so this is my route and the bottom C-Body line will connect with our existing horizontal body line to fit in perfect, wish me luck I guess, I hope to make a ton of progress to get it prepped

Well, that all seems very creative and I hope the best of luck on your mission.

Personally I have taken quite a bit of interest into integrating a modern gas filler and filler door not only because of the style but also because I have trouble getting gas pump nozzles to stay in my filler neck. They always seem to need to be held in place for the duration of the fill.

I've seen what some of the guys on the forum do with late model Ford emblems replacing the Maverick emblem on the deck lid, and I thought about replacing the original fuel filler cap with one if I do decide to go the more modern filler route.

Another option that I have looked into heavily which would require a great deal less custom work would involve boring a new hole in the quarter panel and using the stock filler piece ( the one which bolts through the tail panel) and having the gas cap exposed. Stylish and custom but yet still familiar to the muscle car era.

Haha I was afraid no one was gonna reply to this thread, anyways, yea I've been doing research and I've seen how the f100s and late 70s fords people would modify the gas cap and relocate it using a 2004+ f150 gas cap and filler, etc. I was thinking maybe from a Taurus and just make a new door, cause like you quoted above, I also don't like it how when I go to fill gas, it comes out instead of in because the filler tube and the way the gas pump is angled, hard to get it perfect but I actually think a modern gas cap would look good, like the modern mustangs, they have the decorative cap in the back and the actual gas door on the side

I'll be interested in seeing how this turns out. I'm not sure I follow your plan on the quarters so I'll have to follow along and see what you pull off with them. Part of the reason I have a Maverick is there is less backlash for modifying these cars. I had a 68 GTO before and at that time you were chastised for deviating from stock when you had a two owner numbers matching car. Funny how things change, now it's totally acceptable to hack into a nice muscle car and throw an LS under the hood.

I'll have to check the local yard inventory on Taurus's . I was thinking I would have to cut the whole piece out of the quarter panel.

That's because the original or 2nd owners are now dead or too old to care...

I'm still totally against modifying low production muscle cars, many of those had numbers less than 10,000, some far less than that...

I agree, some cars shouldn't be molested and I thought my GTO was one of them. I was the second owner and since it was numbers matching I decided to sell it to someone that would do it right.
