Hi all and Happy New Year!!! 2016 is starting with my last Smog Check EVER as after that my car will get too old And I failed this one because of a plugged vacuum line... The Smog Tester tells me it has to go somewhere but couldn't tell me where it is suppose to go. Se here's a photo of said line (circled in RED with letter A) and I was wondering if it should go to B (circled in GREEN) as there is nothing going to this little pipe? Or should it go somewhere else? It is on the passenger side of a 6 cyl 250ci 4.1L engine, right below the carb. Thanks!
Your "smog tester" doesn't have a clue. LOL Cars of this era came with vacuum tees with extra openings on them. They were capped off at the factory. Looks like somebody replaced the cap with a hose/screw. Just get a set of vacuum caps at your auto parts store and replace that hose/screw and it is all good. "B" looks like it may be the steel choke tube?
haha damn, I'll just do that then, I still have to go back to him for the 2nd visit though :/ B goes straight into the Exhaust Manifold I believe so I don't really know where I should connect it to?
I'm in agreement with Craig, if they question the vac cap, say that was connected on A/C models only(or if you have A/C was without A/C only)... For the fresh air pickup should be a connection on underside of air cleaner that a length of vacuum hose will connect between it and the steel line...
good trick! As for the connection on the underside of the Air Cleaner it is already connected to the line going to the left side of A though. Is this one wrongfully connected and so should I insted connect it to the B tube? If so does the line from left of A needs to be plugged shut too? Or does it goes somewhere else?
Yeah the line that the A is standing on should probably be connected to the steel line... That does assume it's just a opening into air cleaner base and doesn't operate a thermostatic flap in the air cleaner snorkel... I believe there are vac line diagrams on here someplace...
the connection in the air cleaner does not set any flap, so it should go to the steel pipe then... Thanks! I checked the diagrams on here and couldn't see the 3 lines coming out of A preciselly, hence this thread. So last quick question : I'll then end up with 2 plugged holes on the A side? Apparently... As mentioned it's common for the manifold taps to have ports capped off... If you think you'll get grief at the testing center, use a length of hose hooked to both that loops out of sight and then back to the manifold...
I'm reviving this post a little, first, thanks for all the help, I've redone the vacuum properly and the car does start and run smoothly faster in the morning! 2nd, I passed the SMOG so that's a good plus haha Lastly a quick question, my vacuum line works everywhere below the hood and the lines going to the firewall and then dash are also working great. But I still can't get all my in car vents to blow hot air, the vacuum lines don't seem to be able to open everything but I cannot locate where the line is faulty. Are there any easy access below there or should I just put my all dashboard out to access it? Also, it's an AC car but as I'm out of gas it's been disconnected for years. Does having the AC unit not powered enough have anything to do with the heating system inside the car? Like blowing through the vents and all? should I replug the AC unit just for that even if I don't turn the AC on? Thanks!
The heat - A/C selector routes vacuum to the various actuators to change function, these days there's a 99.99% chance it's defective... Also the vac lines may be cracked/broken and or actuators defective...
If there is a vacuum leak with the heater/AC system.....the default position is the defrost. If all your air is coming out there and it won't change....you have a leak.
Yes....all vacuum controlled. If it is stuck on defrost....you have a leak. Start with the vacuum canister under the hood on the passenger side. Very common for it to leak. Just needs a bead of silicone around the nipple where it attaches to the can.
Thanks for your replies, the vacuum line going to the firewall is still working, so I'm guessing it's past that my vacuum is leaking, any easy access I have missed or does the dashboard need to go to fixe that? Thanks!
