I have a 74 mav 302 and the power steering pump keeps making a loud humming sound. It only makes this noise when the engine is warm and when I press the gas. Is this a common problem? Any help appreciated!
I take it that it is full of fluid? If so, has it run out before? Sounds like you have a bearing going bad in that pump. To make sure it is the pump, take a piece of long wood, sawed off broom handle etc. have someone rev your engine while you hold the high tech wooden tool against the reservoir- clear of the drive belt. If you can hear it vibrate in this high tech wooden tool when you hold it near your ear, it is surely your p/s pump. Replace it. You can also test your alternator for bad bearings using this highly scientific method. Oh, and water pumps have been known to make similar noises. Good luck- Seth
Its full of fluid and im pretty sure it hasn't ran out of fluid either. I'm pretty sure it is the power steering pump it is pretty loud and the sound is coming directly from the area the pump is located.
mad25, the way i check alt., water pump and power steering pump is to remove the belts, one at a time. power steering pump makes a "whinning" sound ... water pump makes a "knocking" sound alt. makes a "chirpping" sound remember these are "southern" cars so the sound yours makes might sound diff. ...frank...
