While the weather is starting to get better and we get close to spring/summer. I have my engine almost ready to install. I have to measure pushrods and get those and rockers installed. Some more jst small misc. stuff. Then put the motor in. I blew up the original 302 last year I have some questions ...first one ....wait for it....headers. I have a set of Hedman 88408 shorties. I have seen pics of them looking as if they fit, I have seen collectors cut off and pipe extended...which is not a bad idea anyway in my opinion. I have a power steering box with a manual pitman arm and manual everything else. I have cut out the old column shift linkage and will be installing a floor shift. I have already swapped the shift lever out of the C4 for a floor shift one and put a new set of those small o rings in there....and a new filter/gasket. I have not done a shelby drop. But I have "heard" that if the engine (94 5.0 ) is raised up about 3/8 - 1/2 inch that it really helps. Does anyone you know by chance? I have also heard to try and find some 63 falcon engine mounts?????or 65 mustang engine mounts???? I have the original mounts still on mine. Also, I do not think it will be a problem but...a 1994 5.0 will bolt up to 1973 C4....right? I have got a 50oz flexpate, a hughes stall, and will also be installing FLOOR SHIFT. I have both starters....does it matter which one I use....should I get one of those smaller ones? So I know there are a lot of folks on here that are the best when it comes to Mav's and anything you can do with them so PLEASE. I have been a non paying member for about 3 years and I have looked at and through this site almost everyday and have leaned a lot. I know all cars are different and things don't always work the same. But I am just trying to do as much brain-soaking and part gathering as I can..... so hopefully most of this will go smoothly... Thanks Jerry
maybe hes thinking he cant ask questions or people will treat him differently if hes a non paying member?
It works like that at Burger King .. not here ! Usually the folks on this forum are forthcoming with pertinent information and in general try to be helpful. Paid up.. or not! Cometized (Chip)
Oh man..please...... I did not mean anything by that at all. I apologize if it seems or sounds that that way. I have not a single bad thing to say about this forum. I am a huge fan and look up things and post stuff all the time. I just didnt feel like I should say or boast that I have been a member when I don't pay.... that's all. I know a lot of you guys have been here a long time and have contributed a ton. And I have never felt like I was treated wrongly or any different. So I guess it just came out wrong. Looking at it now I guess I can see where it does sorta look as if I could be saying...HEY what I have got to do to get some help around here??? Pay?? I CAN PROMISE EVERYONE that is NOT what I meant. Please believe me. Thanks and sorry for the way it reads. JerryD
Hey man, whats a guy gotta do to get a drink around here??? Oops I'm in the wrong bar... Took me awhile to contribute but after seeing how worthwhile this site is, I felt the need... I rarely look at a members status, I'll give same answer either way and suspect it's same for most other members...
So first question is.... Will the 88408 shorty headers fit? They should fit, sometimes you have the same part number but for whatever reason one fits better than the other. With shortys they have a hard 90 degree bend from the collector which may cause issues with the flow of the exhaust but should not be an issue. Your going to have to install them to make sure they fit. When installing long tubes I have found that by raising one side of the engine the headers install easier. The other side will install easy without lifting the engine. I'm not sure about the different heights on the engine mounts I thought they would all be the same. With the 94 5.0, you'll need the 50oz flex plate and balancer to match. Keep in mind the 5.0 water pump is a reverse rotation pump and the older pump is standard rotation. The 5.0 dipstick is on the side of the block and the older dipstick is on the front of the block. You will also need the front sump oil pan and corresponding sending unit for the pump. The 5.0 timing cover uses a electronic pump so the side of the timing cover is not machined for a manual fuel pump. Inside the timing cover is going to be an oil slinger instead of the fuel pump eccentric for a manual fuel pump.
Basically you strip the newer engine to long block and then reuse everything but dist from the orig engine(includes oil pickup and fuel pump eccentric on front of cam)... All 302/5.0 have same motor mount bosses on block, reuse your orig... You'll need a newer dist with a bronze or steel gear, as the steel roller cam will eat the iron gear on orig dist... BTW If you have column shift automatic or std trans you'll need a aftermarket bracket to support linkage on block as the orig was eliminated...
Good catch, forgot about the dist gear. Make sure to plug the dipstick hole on the side with the engine out, It's just much easier. When I've done the swap to a roller motor I'd replace the oil pump and timing chain with new items since You have easy access to them. I would also use an 85 mustang distributor for a manual trans, it comes with the gear change and is easily adapted to electronic ignition.
Re-reading you post I think there may have been some miscommunication on raising the engine. You only raise the engine while you install the headers by a jack or a hoist temporarily not permanently.
I have done the following to a 73 Mav and 94 5.0: Plugged the oil stick hole with a 9mm case Used my 73 timing cover and fuel pump eccentric new mech. fuel pump I installed a new TFS Stage 1 cam, TFS lifters and the short pin (it seemed to match the old 73 cam's pin for the eccentric) I had to replace oil pan as when I blew up the 73 302... the short block and oil pan had gaping holes the 94 block bored.030 new pistons/rings rebuild kit/ bearings, timing chain etc GT40 heads new springs and rebuilt...just basic freshen up no porting etc. I have a 50oz balancer a 50oz flexplate a hughes stall (around 2500-3200) Weiand dual plane aluminum intake Holley 600 I just painted some nice chrome valve cover gold. First I took off the long oil neck. It just stood out too much for me I luckily had a "spare" C4 and it was floor shift from factory so I used the shift mech. from it. Mine in the car was leaking around the shift lever so I bought the little o-rings off ebay and installed the shift lever. Along with a new filter and gasket. The car had PS but leaked everywhere and was very sloppy...so I traded a guy all off the PS stuff for some manual steering parts and front disc hubs. I put new upper and lower control arms tie rod ends. I left the power steering box and put the manual pitman arm on. Font disc brakes New rear brake cylinders New cross flow alum radiator with nice elec. fan ( I need to get a temp switch for it so it wont run all the time) Well I also finally found a windshield so that has to be installed. I have the gasket already. I also have what looks like a Mustang spoiler on the car now. I have a 3 piece grabber spoiler that needs some repair and I will put that on. And my wife bought me a new 2 piece carpet kit So I want to do a back seat delete, freshen up/paint side panels and door panels and the dash. I have a new cap and the dash is primed and ready for paint. Think about getting some ebay 4 point harness and just bolt them down thru the floor. CONCERNS: I plan on using the 73 distributor...I swapped out the points and went with Pertronix set up and Flame Thrower coil on the 73 motor. After I figured out the whole resistor wire thing it worked pretty good. I really don't care so much for the looks the big all in one distributors of today so I had a machine shop swap the gear on the 73 distributor. SO I will have my fingers crossed there. I did think about getting a 85 setup and may still have to. New standard oil pump, one thing here...when I was assembling the motor and installing the oil pump, I noticed it was kind off hard to get to to bolt all the way down??? it did go all the way down but I am still worried something may not be correct there. I just got the tunnel hump bracket to mount the floor shift. The floor shifter I have is from a Mustang and looks a little smaller??? but I am thinking I will have to extend the lever (under the shifter) and come up with either a cable set up or all-thread and hiem joints kinda deal. The car has been sitting for better than a year now and I am worried about the gas in the tank, I will ciphen, siffen??? it out and hopefully not have too much trash to worry over Header clearance and exhaust $$$ I have a set of Hedman 88408 shortie style so I hope they fit I had to sort of JERRY rigged (yes that is my name so laugh all you want) my alternator on the orig. motor after I had removed the PS pump. Just did not line up??? I bought a nice looking billet looking bracket kit from Summit but now I am afraid it will set up real high....from pictures I have seen of this bracket on motors it sets up there. I have saved some pictures where a guy doing a turbo mounted it down low on the PS side??? As you may can tell I have a lot to do. and I do not really have a shop or building to do all of this inside. So I am at the mercy of good old Mother Nature. Oh well it s fun and it reminds me of my Dad (R.I.P) so its all worth it...I think Thanks for any direction and advise! Jerry D
Looks like you have it pretty much figured out, keep us posted. My concerns are about the seatbelts. You don't just want to drill holes and bolt them in. Most seat belts mounts have some bracing so they just don't rip through the floor board during a collision.
Yeah I thought about maybe sometype of flat washer/metal?? OR maybe a pipe threaded in the middle with a coupling and flat flanges on the ends so I could adjut tight against the sides??? I would have to do 2 of those casue of the tranny hump??? I wonder if there is something under there already similar to what the old seat belts are anchored to? I only have 1 front one too thats not right is it? 1973 2 door
