Hello using a 15 inch whell what is the widest rims/tires and backspacng that can fit under a 1970 mav?

I cann't seem to find the 15x3.5 to 15.4.5 slotted mags so i am thanking of going with a 15x7 to a 15x8 on the front to get that bulldag look. I was thanking about a 245-60-15 tires on the front

I was looking into 235 60 15, and will try them out in a couple weeks. I just got new used rims, and rather than buy the new tire, I go to a used tire dealer, have him install the size I think will work, and try it out a while before I buy the final new tire.

Just put on 245 60 15 on the rear, and they look great. But, I might go 255 60 15 when I buy the final new ones. So, I am out $60 on the 245s, but I get to drive them around for 6 months, or until I wear out the remaining tread. Also, I lucked out and got two matching BFG T/A Radials, with nice white letters. Looks cool!

My guess is 245's on a 7 inch rim. The tire may need to be around 9 inches wide on a rim. You need to do some measurements for yourself to be sure. Each car might be different. The widest that I know some one has put is a 245/40/17 or 245/45/17. One was on a 7 inch rim & the other on a 8 inch rim.

It will depend on the wheel backspacing and whether or not the front has been lowered. It's still way too tall of a tire; it's 26 inches tall. Your car will be a "high-boy". I have 225/60-15s on the front right now. They rub on turns because I lowered the front and the backspace is 3-3/4". I think 4-inch might be ideal. I will replace the springs to raise the front a little bit next summer...

    And the answer is...

How come each time someone asks a wheel-size question, we get no definite answer. Let's all assume the car is stock (ie. not lowered, no Mustang II front end, etc.) and get an answer. I would bet that most of the guys asking have a '74-'76 mav, all original, bought from the original owner (an old lady from Pasadena, TX), with no mods.

    But still, no answer.

As far as the rear, I just put on 245 60 15 and don't think I could go any bigger. I am about 1/4 inch from rubbing on all sides, but not the top, since I have done a lift job.

A similar answer for the front would be very helpful for Jap901 and myself.

    Thanks in advance.

The reason is because the offset makes the difference. I fitted a billet wheel that was 18x9 on the front. It fits fine because the spendle sits inside the rim. 17x9 will not fit, its even with the spendle. its all about the offset. That's why a late model mustang wheel will not fit our cars, but the bolt pattern is the same. OFFSET OFFSET OFFSET is a must with these cars.
