1974 with a 200ci motor. Has been sitting awhile. Gas gauge doesn't work. Ran out of gas and put just enough in to get to the gas station. Filled it up and only held 9 gallons. Any thoughts ?

Either you have a really big dent in bottom of tank or there is a issue with the pickup...

Could the pump have shut off automatically before the tank was actually filled?

Could be plugged fuel filter and/or fuel pick up sock is gummed up.
If it has been sitting for ages with fuel in the tank, there is varnish every where in the fuel system. Worst case you will need a thorough cleaning / treatment of the fuel tank. When you remove the fuel sending unit, it will likely either have a defective float, or be crudded up.

The gas pump probably turned off prematurely. Happens to mine all the time with these newer pumps. Try a different station, or pumping slower.

if the tank had 10-11 gals. of gas in it, it ain't the sending unit.
the sending unit may be the reason your gas gauge doesn't work.

Maybe part of the pick-up tube has rusted away leaving a hole that it cannot get any suction further down the tube. Replace the sender unit.

Ran into this same thing several times on marine applications.
