    Hello,
I have just finally aquired my father's 71 Comet GT, which I had been after for about 24 years. We always assumed it was a GT, because that's what he was told when he bought the car in 1992. Is there any way to confirm whether or not the car was originally a GT? I have heard people refer to "gt clones", so I am assuming there is a way to differentiate between a clone and a real GT?
    Thanks!

Your welcome -- that's why we are , help others w/ their projects. You might also, consider coming to the MCCI Roundup this coming July in Dayton, Ohio. There will be many Maverick/Comets there.

Whether the car is a GT or a clone is really not relevant the fact you have it and acquired it from your father is, not many early Comets around so be proud and enjoy it

    Hi CometGTgrabber,
Where in Canton are you? I live in Redford and drive the Maverick LDO shown at left. I call it BAM, which stand for Bad Ass Maverick. My son drives a Comet that is an exact clone of mine. My first new car was a 1971 Comet GT. E-mail me at miricharts@aol.com if you want to discuss Mavericks and Comets.

If it's a clone it's worthless. I'll take it off your hands.

:Welcome: from Atlantic Canada! Let's see some pictures!!! There are a few tiny things that are often overlooked when cloning a Comet GT that might be able to 'suggest' whether or not it's a REAL GT, but for ultimate proof, an original window sticker or a Marti Report are really the only way to tell with 100% certainty. Unlike 71-75 Grabbers, there is no unique VIN assigned to GT's.

Looking forward to seeing what your Marti Report yields.

    Welcome..

If it has painted drip rails it's probably the real thing... Even GT used stainless if a vinyl top was ordered...

I wouldn't worry much about keeping it authentic. Build it how you like. Comet GT's won't bring in big money unless they're low mule originals. Even then they won't bring in the big $$

Unfortunately, it's still in my father's garage, so I was unable to get pictures of the whole thing. I have a few. Probably get the Marti report this weekend.
