Thanks guys, for all your input on the seats. Not sure how to feel about this new development...
I guess I need to try to locate a set of buckets. Any extras out there?

My theory on your seats is that either someone hated highbacks and swapped some early Mustang backs onto the factory seat bottoms. It wasn't until the late 60s that many cars got headrests. If you take the seats out, the bottoms should have a stamped metal tag to help ID them. I would bet the bottoms came with the car. It would be fairly easy to use other Ford upper frames and swap the foam and factory upholstery over, and then shorten both.

Another idea... I have seen a lot of highbacks with broken driver seat backs, especially in 71-73 Mustangs. I call it the "fast car/fat driver" syndrome. Break the seat back, you need to replace it somehow.

I'm very glad you took the advice to Marti report the car. I once owned one that I wish I had Marti'ed before I sold it!

In addition to finding remnants of the vinyl top and stipes, I also came across some documentation with the previous owners name and address! From that, I was able to obtain a current address and phone #. Going to call today. Hopefully he is willing to answer questions, and knows the deal with the seats.

Here are the seat tags, can anyone verify if they match yours? I was able to contact the previous owner! He only had it a few years, and didn't have any info on the seats. He did remember giving my dad the build sheet, so I'll have to keep searching for that.

I would say good chance those are the original bottoms with the D1ZB part numbers. Can post better pics of the bottoms and back latches? That would be a give away. The only real difference in the 71-73 was when they moved the seat release latch from the corner of the seat back to the middle. I can't remember which yep ear had whic though. -Matt

If I get up there this weekend, I'll get more and better pics of the seats. My latch is in the center.
