Towards the end of last season (i drive my maverick seasonally, Canadian winters are rough!) I noticed an exhaust leak right at the manifold, upon further inspection, it seams the manifold is warped (its not terrible, but the car is noticeably louder, and id assume its not great for the car) Ive been looking at NEW exhaust manifolds for a while and am starting to wonder if getting an exhaust manifold is worth it? Headers arent much more (some sites sell exhaust manifolds for 280+ shipping, in Canadian $)

What im asking is is it worth it to get an exhaust manifold OR just go to headers? Which is more reliable? Better performance?? Ive read that the exhaust manifolds are prone to warping / cracking, and im on my second manifold (original was cracked)

Sorry for the long post, any help is much appreciated!!!

New exhaust manifolds are not available for Mavericks. While headers always flow better, they are a real pain. They are a tight fit, they are hot, and additional exhaust work will also be required. Installation can be a real pain. Cheap headers will not last, and may leak.

The 200 six header shouldn't be that tight of a fit and will give the car a different sound. Plus the performance gain. - Matt

I had a phone call with this this company awhile back, its fora 68-73 mustang, they said it would fit,

This site also says it fits a 70-72 mav

Should i consider buying a used Manifold?
I am on my second, (first one was cracked when i bought the car) and the one on now was on for about 5 months before it became warped, it wasent when installed and was installed correctly

Can anyone provide a link to a "good quality" header?

    thanks again!

I had a set of Clifford research dual outlet headers on a 250 for about 15 years before they finally rusted out. They flowed better but also required a carb re-jet to keep if from running lean. Damn things dragged on every speed bump I ever crossed.

Sorry, I glossed over the fact that it's a inline six.

i bought an ebay stainless steel header and installed it back in January. Since yours is an earlier mav and probably without a/c, all you have to do is take off the starter to install, buy a header gasket, and buy new header bolts since they will all be the same size, and then have an exhaust shop make a Y pipe to fit it back on the old exhaust. All together shouldn't cost more than 250 bucks or so. my header cost 180 and the gasket and bolts were another 40 or so usd.

why buy a used manifold(that was probably just milled back into spec' anyways) when you can do the exact same thing to yours for less money?

Personally speaking, I hate restrictive factory "any manifold" and look for opportunities to replace them whenever possible. But that also typically leads to those numerous moments when you wish you'd just have left well enough alone. Esspecially true when the rest of the complimentary power producing parts have not been added. Header alone with free flowing muffler only adds about 5-10 peak horsepower on these little engines but the average power gains to be had from reduced pumping losses can jump up enough to improve throttle response and mileage a little too. As Matt already mentioned above, be sure to retune the ignition and carb for best results. All depends on how big a can of worms you are prepared to deal with after opening with non-OEM parts swaps.

A six banger with a Clifford header and dual exhaust sounds pretty good so that has to account for something.

It certainly does. Also helped make me feel a little less idiotic for going through all that extra trouble and expense for only 5 or 10 horsepower too! And if you turn the idle waayyy low with a big muffler?.. it allmmmooosstt sounds like a little V8. :yup:

Ok.. I admit it. I was one of "those guys" at one time too. My ears certainly aren't thanking me for it either. :D
