So the steering wheel in my '73 is cracked all the way around pretty bad and isn't looking too great. What options are out there for a new steering wheel? Do I need to stick with Maverick parts or are there other options out there that look good too? The interior is blue so keeping it blue would be a nice thing.
You can get a Grant, but I personally don't care for them. A '74-'78 Mustang-II sport steering wheel is the way to go for these cars...
There are a bunch of wheels from Grant or Lecarra to pick from, as far as the mustang II wheel goes the only ones i'v seen were ones with the horn on the side, on the turn signal switch (no horn button) Not sure if this is a fact for all years of the mustang II . But I think the only thing good about a mustang II (of any year) was it rack & pinon and the steering wheel itself.
Depends on what LOOK you are going for. I for one like the GRANTS. Check out their site and see. I'm thinking of going with the Elite GT 742 or the 1065...check'em out. http://www.grantproducts.com/default.html
Many Ford wheels from other models are exact fits. The F Series wheels are good examples. I have a few decent ones here if you want to drop me an e-mail. They can be redyed if the color is a problem. I redyed the one in the PoliceMav and it looks great.
they are sold at pep boys but i'm sure you can get them at summit i'd go and check them out first then you knwo what your getting personally i like Lecarra over Grant.. even though i do have a grant on one of my cars.. it was free so can't complain. IMO Lecarra are made better but cost way more at least a min of $129 bucks not inccluding the hub. You can't beat the price on a Grant they go any where from as low as $29 to $299 not including the hub. Hubs are about $20 bucks. I really like the ones made in itally like sparco or dino even better but your not going to find the right adaptor for your hub.. you'll have to have someone make one. personally i wouldn't get any other aftermarket ones like APC or Autotecnica or other off brands.. they are really bad.
The factory wheels can be the same from a variety of other Ford/Lincoln/Mercury products as stated previously. I think Autokrafters carries either reproduced or refurbished wheels. I believe they are all black, so you would need to dye it. They are as much as a good aftermarket wheel. I have a Moto-lita (same as LeCarra) wheel on mine. With the hub, IF you can find the one I have it will run you from $225-$300 depending on where you buy it. I already had the hub for free from LeCarra. I bought my wheel from Tony Branda Mustang & Shelby for $200. I was quoted $325 for all of that from another Mustang/ Shelby dealer. Mine is similar to the Mark 3 series at the LeCarra site: http://www.lecarra.com/ They are very similar to the original '65 Shelby GT and Cobra wheels. My wheel during resto looked like this:
Hey man , that chick 2nd from the right looks like someone I used to know!! LOL. Don't forget the fuzzy dice.
What, a Grant, or a facctory sport wheel? eBay is the easiest place to find the factory wheel. Depending upon condition and demand, they go anywhere from $30 to $150.00. I got one from a junkyard for $8.00, but it was in sad shape. I got a decent one off eBay but so many other people wanted it that it ended up costing me $126.00. Since I lost out on the first four I had bid on, I was determined to get this one, so I paid too much. They are perfect for a Maverick...
I picked up one from a guy at the Roundup last year. Traded a right side sport mirror for it. Most guys put the grill medallion in the center.
I've been checking them out for a while now. My interior is black...and I have a GT....so the Grant Elite GT 1065 is the one for me...133.00$. D. Ray
