All, I am loving our "like minded" community. I want to start a "what works for power and what doesn't" list. I recently installed an electric fan on my Mav and felt a tire burning difference. Yes, this is common knowledge, but i notice lots of you guys have flex fans. Maybe we can post similar to the maverick count. Have a list of known power mods. We can cut through the hype and learn from each other. My known changes that made noticeable differences for me so far. (See Below) From flowmaster to Borla Turbo mufflers (expensive but worth the effort) From Flex Fan to Electric Fan (a must) Adjusting (adjustable roller rockers) from 1/2 to 1/4 turn. (make sure to tighten properly) Coming soon: Exhaust H pipe, K&N Stub Stack, aluminum drive shaft. (for now)
Flex Fans are DANGEROUS and have been known to KILL a Maverick enthusiast when the blades separated from the hub and slashed the mans jugular vein . He bled out before the could get help. He was ' winging the throttle with the hood up and the fan " let go " .. I have a flex fax that has NEVER been on a car .. Nor will it EVER be ! Just an ornament and reminder NOT to use them. Just my take on the fan issue . Cometized (Chip )
My build is high performance from start to finish, but the areas that I noticed nice HP gains on the dyno were simple and mostly bolt on. Header change was good for both a good HP and TQ gain. Electric water pump was worth 10 HP from 2500 to 3900 rpm and 13 hp above that until redline. As a percentage I think this would be higher on a lower hp motor that does not make the torque of a stroker. Electric fan was good for an average hp gain of 9 hp across the dyno test. If a larger alternator is needed to power the fan and water pump the power gains would be somewhat negated by the extra energy needed to turn it. There would however still be gains. Port matching my intake was good for around 12 hp and head porting was done during the build so no quantifiable number there. Results of these type of mods vary based on what a motor needs or wants. But pick up 2 or 3 horsepower in ten places and you have a difference that can be felt. An open top air cleaner should also make a difference depending on hp levels but we have not proven that yet.
Great Info! I have ported 289 heads and they far exceeded my expectations. This is exactly the info that helps people make decisions on where to put time and money into. Thanks for sharing. I was trying to find any numbers on port matching alone just the other day.
P.S. Amsoil Engine Masters (Youtube) has dyno testing on many different air cleaner set-ups. It' good stuff.
Not often that we see dyno proven info nice that you have factual info, most is butt o meter data. As stated stay away from flex fan and also stay away from the Edelbrock triangular shaped air cleaner with foam filter held on by little wire cage, one backfire and the foam catches fire, first hand experience on this one.
some say that the windows down in a car will cause a performance loss. I had my Mav. on a dyno once and did a pull with the windows down, both doors open and the hood up...no decrease in HP or torque numbers...must be a myth...
Both. Ahem......remember there are folks around here that shamelessly hide alphabet soup under their hood.
