Hi, To what extent do "numbers match" on a 76 Comet? The only place I see my VIN is on the metal tag riveted to the dash. The data plate is no longer on the car. I guess I can have one reproduced. Is any part of the VIN stamped anywhere else on the car? Thanks
The VIN is stamped into the inner fender top, on drivers side (sometimes passenger too). You need to unbolt and remove the fender to see it. This is a rust prone spot on these cars. Hopefully it is still intact. A partial VIN is stamped into the engine block and transmission too. And some cars have a buck tag attached to the radiator support. Not many, but some.
Useful information. On 6cyl engines there is a machined pad or two on sides of block, the partial VIN will be stamped there... It's also stamped on top side of the C4 automatics, usually just behind where the bellhousing mates to main case. Std trans it's approx same location, usually by one of the mounting ears... Your car as example, the partial VIN will have 30T omitted.
And, they got pretty sloppy with the stampings. Finding an extra digit or being off by a couple is not uncommon.
The voided VIN was stamped by equipment designed for this operation... The actual VIN is hand stamped(note fonts are different), results in oddly spaced & angled numerals..
The V-8's had the VIN stamped on the back of the block on the top pad where it meets the trans. I have the original 302/c-4 for my 71 GT.
