It's been a long time coming but I have finally installed the Classic Inlines aluminum cylinder head that I had acquired during the interim period when Classic Inlines was becoming Vintage Inlines(since the owner of Classic Inlines passed away). I still need to install a torque strap on the driver side to prevent the intake from possibly hitting the shock tower as there is only 1/2 inch clearance.
Very nice setup, especially in the devilish details ... presume carb is 2300 - 4412 500CFM - any info on jetting or fuel & ign. mods of your setup appreciated .. have fun BTW ... just met a guy with a bunch of vintage early Chevelle's - he said now he's building with the original SIX engines because he's tired of SBC / BBC builds and there is plenty available cool vintage and newer performance equipment for inline GM sixes as well as Ford.
Carb and ignition are the same as with the log head. I have a modified 4412...custom metering block...milled off choke horn...screw in idle bleeds...annular boosters. Been awhile since I have been inside the carb so can't recall what jets I have in there. I will be re-evaluating that after awhile. Running carter electric fuel pump and Performance Distributors DUI dizzy.
Overall quality is good with the head and intake...everything lines up well with the exception of the pass thru holes in the head for the pushrods. I had to enlarge those holes so the pushrods would not rub.
That's awesome!!! Is it more performance oriented than the iron head or just basically a replacement in aluminum? 6 in a row makes it go!!!
Can you make a video of your solid lifter 6 cylinder including the exhaust so we can observe and hear it in operation ?
Those flow charts are interesting comparisons with the old 289HP, 351W, 351C and gt40 heads. Not an outstanding performer in the group. But of course we knew that about the 289HP and 351W. According to these charts, the exhaust side of my out-of-the-box AFR 165 Competition Package heads at .400, .500 and .600 lift outflow a 351 C's intake side. Even with the 351C's monster ports. The gt40 on the exhaust side is not good. New technology is a wonderful thing!!! Flow Charts
Awesome little motor! Too bad you can't get a decent air filter on that thing, Gene. Those little filters show all your bling but are restrictive as hell compared to a larger diameter base unit. Mostly to do with the very short floor distance and quicker more abrupt turn into the air horn from the filter media. Shock tower proximity looks dreadfully close but maybe you could go a bit taller and/or use a deeper pleated filter design? BTW, deeper pleats add filter media flow area and also straightens the air as it flows through the media. There are many companies who will make you a custom sized filter. S&B, maybe R2C?(cleanable dry style, what I plan on using for all my own stuff). Can't remember the place in SoCal that I used to get mine from(lost tons of data in last computer crash) but they would mold you whatever diameter and height you specified in the deeper 1.25" pleats. http://www.r2cperformance.com/products/4412_2_barrel_power_base.aspx K&N used to make stubstack for the 4412's too.. not sure if they're still around or not.
Yeah...the problem is a 250 sits higher than say a 2oo and there is very little room under the hood...especially considering how close to the fender that carb sits. And I even had to eliminate the base plate for this air cleaner as it pushes it too high and the air cleaner hits one of the underhood braces...and I don't want to cut the car up. So the filter is actually sitting directly on the carb. Another alternative is a carb hat with a remote filter but I just don't care for the looks of those.
I took a video and posted it on youtube. Here is the link: The motor is still a bit cold so you can really hear the solid lifters talking!
That's as cool as it can be! I love looking at some of the drag roadsters running that inline stuff. They say it's one of the best kept secrets in sportsman racing. What kind of power do you thin it makes now? I'd say the air fter setup is restring it some. But, I get it. The hat and remote filter looks goofy on old cars.
