Hi all, New to the forum, and just wanted to introduce myself. My 1st car at 15 was a very clean 71' Maverick 170 ci with a 3 on the tree. My dad and I swapped the 170 for a 302 and a three speed. I later replaced the 3 speed with a 4 speed, had fun driving this car all thru high school. I reluctantly sold the car before joining the Air Force in 1988. I have since made a career with 30 years in aviation, and have owned a lot of other classic cars. I have a pretty diverse collection at the moment, but recently added a very clean Maverick to the herd. I purchased this car from my brother who has owned the car off and on for more than 20 years. My father restored the car which started as a clean Texas car. It's currently a 302 auto with a mild drivetrain. I have plans to make this a fun car and do the things I would have liked to have done to my first maverick had I been in a financial position to do so. I'll try and keep the forum in the loop with the transformation. I would like to thank you all for posting lots of useful information on this forum. I have learned a lot reading thru posts from your trials, tribulations, and triumphs.
Got a little work in on the car today. Installed grabber stripes and did some work on the front suspension. Ended up having too cut 2 coils to get the front rake I was looking for and installed adjustable drag shocks.
Next step is grabber hood and rear suspension. Have full Calvert suspension from a 68 GT mustang I sold that’s going in.
Sweet looking car, nice that you have reached a point in life and have the chance to fulfill dreams you had in younger years. Nothing wrong with hood and scoop you have now though
Picture of the engine bay as I received the car from Ohio. Next picture is work in progress, and far from done. Added aluminum radiator (brother provided with car, still need electric fan), drop base aircleaner, valve covers, relocated and upgraded coil with an MSD I had, heater/box delete (don't need it here in the desert, but kept it for future use), already had hooker 6901 ceramic coated headers (fit really nice), also already had a small cam and performer intake (sounds nice, thanks brother!), comp engineering adjustable shocks, will install billet MSD distributor, ford racing plug wires, aluminum water pump, and Holley mech fuel pump this weekend (all left overs from a previous 68 mustang GT I sold). I will be replacing the pump to carb fuel line this week with a -6 Fragola nylon braided hose/filter and associated fittings. I will be trunk mounting the battery and completely updating the electric and fuel system. These will all be designed to support an 8.2 deck height or hopefully an 9.5 deck height stroker down the road (requirement is must fit under stock grabber hood). I have been weighing everything removed and anything going on to track weight reduction, and will post the results.
