I am going to take the engine fan off and do an electric fan. The engine fan is bolted thru the water pump pulley with long bolts. Once this is gone what length bolts will I need to reinstall the pulley to the water pump without the fan assembly.

I gather that you will be removing the spacer behind your fan too and just attaching the pulley to water pump? If this is the case, then 1/2 - 3/4" bolt is enough, 5/16 UNF (fine thread bolt).

Thanks! Is there a specific torque recommended or as tight as I can get them. Is thread lock necessary?

tighten until they start to strip then back off 1/4 turn...JK
I don't think there is a specific torque recommended for the pulley without the fan and spacer.
thread lock...a drop probably wouldn't hurt.

I was going to say just before the bolt breaks

Assuming a grade 8 fastener, 24ft lb is max for a 5/16 - 24 thread per inch bolt...

This is same spec for a std 289/302/5.0 rod bolt, not tighten till it's ready to break...

since you will have to purchase new 5/6-24 x 1/2 - 3/4" bolts, depending on what grade rating you get 5 or 8,
13 ft/lbs torque is enough to hold the pulley and use lockwasher or blue locktite on threads.

    Sounds reasonable to me.

I usually delete mechanical fans on everything I possibly can and will typically always use stainless bolts(painted or not) and flat washers with a little loctite added. Never pulled them with a torque wrench but I'd guess that any spec falling short of 20 ft/lbs would be plenty enough to hold just the pulley itself on without issue. Never lost one or had it loosen up on me so I continue to stick with the same recipe over time.

I know this is an old thread, but a friend swears to me there will be studs on the water pump... Can anyone verify?

My thermostat housing currently has a water temp gauge installed but my cooling fan came with a temp sensor switch of it's own.. Can anyone recommend another location to install a fan relay temp sensor / switch?

Mounted in the upper hose as close to the radiator as possible.

Can anyone pinpoint the location of a switched power source under the hood for wiring in the electric fan relay?

Well.. attaching the electric cooling fan went pretty well except that that the plastic mounting zip tie style hardware caused a leak in the radiator *sigh. I guess I will purchase an upgrade radiator. Any suggestions??
