I installed a 3G single wire alternator and I noticed that my alternator light doesn't light up when I turn the key on. I have double checked the installation and every thing is ok. so if my alternator bulb burnt, where is the best place to tie in resister. Can I tie the resister in line from the Alternator "I" wire. The instructions show at bulb location. second question is what kind of resister should I buy.?
I just wired a small bulb inline...don't know if this will work for you. this is it mounted in the dash behind the steering wheel. a friend of mine put his behind the dash so not to be seen.
One wire, meaning only the connection from alt to battery?? This leaves the factory alt light disconnected. The factory wiring for original 1G alt has a 15 ohm resistance wire(embedded in dash harness) in parallel with bulb. Meaning if you connect that to I terminal, light will be so dim you'll never be able to see it in daylight. The only way the dash light is going to operate is cut one end of resistance wire and connect a 500 ohm or so resistor in series. When I converted my Comet I cut the wire where it connects to fuse block firewall connecter and inst a 470 ohm resistor. Factory systems for 2G/3G used a 500 ohm resistor across bulb.
with out running to the garage and looking, I think that I wired it to the hot side of the alternator. the instructions said to take it back to the starter solenoid on the hot side. but I figured that that was a closer path. ( so can I use the green/red wire at starter solenoid to tie in a 500 ohm resistor?
The sense wire should go to the starter solenoid as a minimum. I ended up running mine to the battery + terminal. That's the only way it can monitor the load on the whole electrical system. The battery cables cause a voltage drop that the internal regulator can't sense if it's connected to the alternator output terminal. When mine was connected to the output terminal and my Taurus fan turned on the voltage throughout the car dropped 2 volts.
