I saw a very dirty and crusty big bumper comet being towed on a car dolly, here in Ocala yesterday...

I was in traffic, in Inverness FL last week (upper 1/3 of the state, 20 miles inland from the Gulf of Mexico, small town, rural ) and there was a clean big bumper two door a couple cars back in traffic. Happened to glance in my sideview mirror and it took a full three seconds to register ... passing thought, "hey, nice Mav", distracted, my mind was on other things,... and then I woke up " oh, wait a minute, this is in-person, right now!" .... LOL. Nice adrenaline shot there. Snapped me right back into living in the moment.

Looked like a clean, well-cared for survivor. Skinny tires, hubcaps, LDO, vinyl top. Silver with Blue accents.

Saw an earlier model Comet GT and Maverick (see pics) in Hilo, Hawaii last week. As you can see, they're a tad rough. Have to say that I've never seen doors and trunk pans literally fall off a car due to rust. There was also another earlier model Comet in the back of the guy's lot. Any idea who owns these cars?

The Comet looks like it isn't a GT. It has the upper chrome molding, the rocker chrome molding and doesn't look like it ever had a passenger side mirror.

I agree that I don't know if I have ever seen a car rust as bad as that Maverick.

Did all GT's have pass side mirror? My car has the exact same chrome molding! Is it possible the door may have been replaced sometime during it's life?

Dual sport mirrors were part of the GT package on a Comet.

All Comet GT's had the 'Comet GT' side stripes so the upper chrome molding didn't come on them.

Now that I have gotten home and was able to 'blow' the picture up it looks like the Comet in the picture may have had a passenger mirror at one time. I think I can see two bolt holes.

The car also look like it may have a Grabber rear spoiler on it, which weren't available on Comet's or Comet GT's.

As always, cars that are this old could have many things changed on them over the years.

That is Elford Fox's '72 Comet GT. He is from Candor, NC. He still has the car. It is a 302 with a 3 speed floor shifted manual trans.

See if it was a Grabber Blue Grabber?

That guy runs his car in the Coyote Stock' class.

You could be right. I think I see passenger door mirror holes, which would be consistent with a GT (or a GT door or they just drilled holes in the door). The moldings are weird though. The grill and hood look correct for a GT. Hard to say without looking a little closer. In any case, I would say it's a moot point though as it's past saving.

Sport mirrors were an option on non-GT cars too. I also see no evidence of any GT stripes on the car.

Saw a Maverick yesterday and a small bumber four door Comet today. It's the first Comet I have seen in town, should have offered to buy it! 20190517_171759.jpg IMG_20190517_171915_01.jpg

With the hood open you might have been able to get the Comet cheap

I thought the same, my wife, not so much! We were going grocery shopping, apparently that doesn't include buying cars. I told her selling the front bumper and grill could pay for the car but she still didn't see the need
