I plan on doing my own exhaust and I was curious if there are good exhaust kits out there that produce good power and sound great. For clarification on the kit I mean just a bundle of already bent pipes which in theory all I would need to do is bolt on and do some welding. I am thinking about running both pipes down the passenger side of the car. Thanks.

Also, is it true that with open headers on the 302 there is a torque loss?

IMHO, it’s best to go talk to a small local muffler shop and tell them what you want and then have them do the custom install.
But I don’t think you’ll have enough room to run two pipes down the same side of the car.

Mostly rumors spread by those who only know how to bolt on parts.

For max power, headers require dist recurve and carburetor richened to compensate for greater air flow.

Sounds logical to me. Thank you. I will get an exhaust on it asap.

I plan on calling a local muffler shop and see what kind of quote I can get. Thank you for the recommendation.

Many exhaust shops will not perform custom work and then there are others in which you would probably be disappointed with the final product. Do yourself a favor and spend some time in the selection of a quality shop that historically has performed custom work.

I bought mandrel bent pieces and went from headers to 2.25 to a Y pipe, and 3" to the axle, over and out the back. I used one giant round turbo muffler that was 3" in and out and mounted it in the stock location. It is fairly quiet until you stick your foot in it.....I wanted it to not drone, rumble much, and be simple. One 3" pipe will flow nearly the same volume as dual 2.25s with less surface area. I used the stock hanger too as my car was a 6 cyl. car. This was the first system I ever built from scratch.

Here is cell phone footage. Sorry for the puke....didnt realize how much water collects in there; still have not driven the poor car since last Fall. Get to insure it and drive soon though.
