I’m thinking the best option when the time comes is to completely rebuild it with good components because you never know what you’re getting with a used trans.

A friend recently got a 69.5 parts car, so I traded him some parts for these goodies!

I rebuilt the 169 with new gears, year or so later,, - CRUNCH!!!! Busted 2nd on the cluster.. I rebuilt it again to 199 spec(the '90-'93 gear set) and it never gave another problem.

As I've stated cases are different for the 4cyl trans, best bet is sell it and get a V8 version.

Can you please elaborate on the “case difference”?
    Thanks

As I've stated, the opening for input gear/shaft is machined larger on the 4cyl trans. Means the gear, front bearing and retainer are larger than V8. These mods were necessary to fit the stump pulling 3.97 first gear ratio into case. Last I checked, the larger retainer had been discontinued. Being aluminum they are often scored & reason the steel nosed retainers were developed for V8 versions(those should be available but do not fit the 4 cyl trans). The scoring causes throw out bearing to bind, resulting in a stiff(sometimes stuck) clutch pedal. Twenty plus years ago I replaced a couple on Turbo Coupes.

    I’m still confused.
The gear on the input shaft is 4th, 1 to 1 ratio in both 4cyl & V8, 1st is the most rearward gear inside the main case and is installed through the top of the case.

You're correct, it's the gear on input shaft that meshes with cluster that's larger. Those gears effect all other gear ratios.

In fourth gear the input shaft drives the output shaft directly, the gear is irrelevant. The gear on the input shaft is only in play for all the other gear selections, it is the first ratio in the compound ratios that determine the final ratio of each gear (excluding fourth). I might have just confused myself!

Finally decided to fix my leaking windshield. Found out that the gentle man who previously installed it who had done several mavericks previously forgot to put back in the metal stands... He also did not use nearly enough butyl.... Both windows are back in and fully sealed.
