Anyone ever done this? How difficult is it? Are there any specialty tools required or will regular old hand tools be fine? Thanks
Haven't had to do my T5 yet, but I've rebuilt a couple of 3- and 4-speed toploaders. Can't imagine it would be too much different.
Yes I know no more about T5s than I ever wanted to. I know which parts DONT interchange mostly I got my parts from 5speeds.com. They have good service and can give you the right parts if you tell them your tag info. I had found a good T5 manual online in pdf format. I'll see if I can dig it up and host it for you.
I found it, it's 2.0 MB but pretty well detailed. My ftp server is acting up. If you can handle that large of an email attachment I'll send it to you. Just email me at cpmaverick@gmail.com
About a good set of snap ring plyers is the only special tools you need. I've done a couple and they are pretty easy.
It just depends on how precise you want/need to be. Really a transmission is like a rearend, backlash and endplay *should* be checked. However it's not real critical and if you are only replacing synchros and bearings it'd be tough to mess anything like that up.
I dont yet have a t-5. I am looking for one and it seems that those that need a rebuild are pretty cheap. Just wondering if it would be cost effective to get one of these and do the rebuild myself or go ahead and spend the money on one that does not need rebuilding.
I've got rebuild manual online! This isn't an offical manual but it goes into great depth including setting backlash and endplay, something that you *may* need to do! Or at least it's a good thing to check, especially if you are having problems like missed/hard shifting that you can't pinpoint to a synchro or something like that. Here she is! 2.0MB http://www.cpmaverick.com/Misc/T5Rebuild2002.pdf
Well no offense meant but like I said the rundown was lacking some steps that I think are important. But if anyone wants to see them they are in the manual. You can decide if you need to worry about it or not.
Lonnie, you seem to know your stuff. My dad's 95 Mustang GT makes sort of a scrapeing sound in 2nd and 3rd gear. The sound is hard to explain, but its basically a continuous noise that sounds like shhhhhhhh. The transmission has modified gear ratio's in it, could that be what makes the noise? You can hear it alot better sitting in the passenger seat then the driver seat. My dad dosen't seem to think much about it, but it bothers me. He's put 40,000 HARD driven miles on the car with it doing this. Car has about 156,000 on it all together,a about 50,000 on the transmission. Is the transmission telling us to be quiet? Just curious.
