Have a nice pair of Grabber sport mirrors that I got painted, fixed up the passenger side, but the driver’s side (with the cable adjustment) is really throwing me for a loop. The one in the mirrors I have was shot, tore it out before I got them painted. I have a working mechanism that is currently inside a torn up mirror off of a Mustang that is identical to the broken one I have, although I am at a loss for how to transplant the mechanism into the mirror housing I have, without cutting the cables. Does anyone have any experience with taking these guys apart?
There is a way to do it but it is not easy. Unfortunately I don’t have any of my mirrors in front of me to Take pictures. What you have you have to do is first open up these channels a bit. I find a small screw driver works. Once they are opened up a bit you can then compress the knob downwards and put a pair of vice grip on the posterior shaft This will take the tension off the cables. You can then pull down on a cable a bit and pull it out of its groove and release it. Once you do that for all three cables the mechanism will come apart and you can free all the cables. Make sure to take note of the order they go in. They are color coded. Sorry for the crappy picture and description. I don’t have any of my mirrors in front of me to take a step by step guide for it. Once the cables are all free you can loosen the mirror from the base and pull through the cables and then just reverse the process.
Here's a dumb question... Is it possible to just install the same type of non-cable mirror of the passenger side into a driver's side mirror? That would eliminate a lot of work.
Please, someone have an answer? I have the same question, does the driver's side mirror can be converted to a non-cable mirror?? Just like the passenger is??
There is a way to do it, someone did a write up on one of the FB pages. Pretty sure I saved the link to the video somewhere, ill have to look later.
You will have to be part of the group to view it, but here is the link. https://www.facebook.com/groups/229860090462939/permalink/1888082631307335/
Mounting for the mirror adj mechanism is entirely different for R vs L. Not saying it can't be done, but it'll take some riggin' & adaptin' I'm not a member of group and I watched it. I gotta say, it's rather ingenious. May do mod to my Fairlane mirror as it doesn't have any cables(I do have a parts mirror though). Apparently someone snipped cables when car was repainted.
I am planning on doing it to one of my mirrors just to see how it comes out. It does look like a pretty good idea.
I would do that, but ours are already painted and on the car. That, and I like the idea of doing my own mods.
