There is a 79 Ford F-150 302/c4 near me for sale. How new can i go on a 302 that will fit in my 1970? Ive been looking for all the stuff I need to do a c4 on my I6-170. My brother and the guy thats gonna help me do it, says it would just be easier to buy a 302/c4 and drop it in as one. Would a 79 work? I thought there was some change mid 70s in the 302 that make it not fit? Thanks in advance.
Just find a 96 explorer that has less than 100k miles and drop it in. Don’t worry about rebuilding it if you are on a budget. Pretty much any 302 will work for you, just in the Mid 80s they switched to 50 oz balanced. So you will need to change the intake, water pump, timing cover, likely oil pan and 50 oz flex plate. There are tons of threads on this site about to.
Balance changed from 28oz to 50oz in '82 & If you have a 157 tooth C4, requires use of aftermarket flexplate. Also the boss on block to bolt stud for clutch z bar or for column automatic linkage was deleted, easy enough to fab a bracket that bolts to bell housing. Ready made ones are marketed by the Mustang supply houses. If you are getting a good price the '79 engine & C4 should be a drop in. Guessing the C4 would be a big bell, pan fill so tunnel will probably require some massaging('70 tunnel is smaller than other years).
according to the seller , it was motor and tranny rebuilt 40K miles ago. Course I have no way of knowing that. The price seems pretty fair.
Can you hear it run or drive it? Without receipts and hearing it run the value takes a hit as far as I'm concerned. When I see people asking big money for an engine on the floor or engine stand I shy away from them. Too easy to get burned on a "rebuilt" engine you can't run.
Yes. Its still in the truck. Hes going to fire it up for me. My brother has a friend who is a rather good shade tree mechanic. I hope he can go with me. Im just kinda worried about the big bell housing fitting into that tiny tunnel. I assume someone on her has a 1970 C4 with the big bell housing on a 302 or 250. Im rather sure the factory option was a 250 C4.
I have just done a 302 swap in my 70. I used the c4 from a 72 mav that had the 250. Other than the flex plate it was the same trans as a 302 would have had. It fit without issue. When i compared the 200 trans with the 250, the outside was exactly the same.
A case fill C4 is a C4, only difference is the bell/converter of 6cyl(also M-II V8, not same as 6cyl or the regular V8 versions). The pan fill C4 has a larger 164T bell housing but will fit on the case fill trans.. That I didn't think was possible till I saw it with my own eyes.
Thanks everyone. Im going to go look at the truck that has the engine tomorrow. Unless its got some noticeable issues, say ticking or smoke. Im gonna buy it. Its priced right.
