Ok. First thing first. Thanks for ALL the information in the past and all the help with my Maverick. It has come a long way and so have I when it comes to any kind of car knowledge. Im a network/IT person. Dont know jack about cars, but thats why I bought it. So with that said, on with the thread...

I (yes me) am going to be putting a 302 / C4 into my 1970. I started this thread as a place for me to keep track of issues and hopefully get answer for myself and anyone who does it later. I searched the forum and found a lot of helpful threads, but some I did not understand.

So for my first question. Pumps.

It seems that I need a pan with "front pump".. The motor/tranny is from a 1979 F-150. Does anyone know if this is a front pump? How do I tell if it or not.

Thanks again for all your patience.

To keep the pump theme going... Water pump..
Read I have to have a specific type of water pump. I cant find the thread now , but it said something about not using a truck water pump, had to be drivers side discharge , and not reverse rotation. Is this something I need to worry about since the pump is already working on the engine when it was in the F-150?

You need a pan with front SUMP, should already be what's on a '71 motor.

The water pump needs to match radiator inlet(bottom hose). Before 1970 pumps were passenger side inlet, from '70 on, driver side. Assuming you have a passenger side inlet radiator, you'll need a replacement as the balancer and timing marks are also different.

AFAIK the don't use truck pump and might be reverse rotation pump are phooey. Reverse rotation is for late 5.0(incl trucks) with serpentine belt. I've found the pulley/fan bolt spacing are different between clockwise & counter clockwise pumps, can't be installed even if you tried. The exception is the '86-'91 Grand Marquis/Crown Vic, those use a dual serpentine belt and are clockwise rotation.

Rockauto shows the 79 F150 302 uses the same water pump as a 72 Maverick with a 302.

Speaking of radiator, I saw on here that some said you can use the i6 radiator and others said I need aV8 radiator. I know I need a external transmission cooler, but Id like to reuse the i6 radiator since its new.

I would install the radiator you have and if it works out -- roll w/ it. If your running mostly stock engine, and no AC, I suspect it will work. I assume hoses are pass-side outlet (top) same as V8 -- give it a try -- nothin to loose.

A 170/200 will have smaller inlet/outlet than the 250/302 radiator.

    Mounts....
I know I need V8 motor mounts. Do I also need V8 frame mounts or can I use the ones I already have on the '70? Also I read they can be mounted backwards. How do I know which way to face them?

Ok I found three very helpful thread
http://mmb.maverick.to/resources/302-351w-v8-into-a-6-cyl-maverick-or-comet.90/ and http://mmb.maverick.to/resources/for-those-of-you-interested-in-doing-the-i-6-to-v-8.83/ and mostly this one http://maverick.to/grabber/v8swap.html

to that end I think im gonna get this
https://www.autokrafters.com/p-2263...351w-8-cyl-upgrade-grabber-d1dz-v8engkit.aspx , but I still cant find anything on how to make sure I dont put the motor mounts on backwards....

    Fits the following:

    • 1970–77 Maverick

    • 1971–77 Comet

If you want to upgrade your 6-cylinder Maverick or Comet to a 302 or 351W 8-cylinder, this is the kit for you.

    This kit includes:
    • V-8 engine frame mounts
    • Motor mounts and mounting bolts
    • V-8 lower front crossmember and mounting bolts
    • V-8 transmission crossmember, transmission mount, and mounting bolts

Btw that is not my stuff just found it on eBay. You can buy the engine and trans mount pretty much anywhere and will still save money.
