Hey fellow Maverick/Comet-lovers... I'd like to replace my valve stem seals. To do this, of course, I have to remove some of the stuff above the engine. There's a metal tube that goes over the valve cover and links to this thing to the left of the engine, picture attached. What is this? What's it's purpose? If I damage it somehow, will this be hard to replace? My assumption is that it's part of the emissions system, but in spite of browsing these forums and flipping through my trusty Chilton's Guide, I still haven't figured it out. Also: that nut that connects the metal tube, is this some kind of weird proprietary size? I'm pretty close to stripping it with a 5/8ths wrench and my 15mm wrench is too small. Thanks!!
You need to use a flared nut wrench . Anything else will just round it off then it will be vise grip time . I think it is for fuel vapors ?
That is a vacuum line for the power brakes. Replacing valve seals is not necessarily for a novice. It will take some knowledge so one doesn't drop a valve off into the motor.
You would be looking for a 19/32" wrench. They do exist, but just not a common size anymore. They sit between the 15mm and the 5/8" wrenches. - Matt
Actually a 19/32 is all but exactly 15mm(15.081mm), you'll never know difference. Eons ago I went with a uncle to buy a set of metric tools so we could work on his VW bug. The Craftsman set we bought had no 15 mm but did include a 19/32".. With that knowledge, I made it a point to know what metric vs std could be used for each other. With correct flare nut wrench(in my opinion a absolute necessity) that fitting should break loose easily.
